Caning is a widely used form of corporal punishment in Singapore. It can be divided into several contexts:judicial,prison,reformatory,military,school and domestic. These practices of caning as punishment were introduced during the period of British colonial rule in Singapore. Similar forms of corporal punishment are also used in some other former British colonies,including two of Singapore's neighbouring countries,Malaysia and Brunei.
Capital punishment in Singapore is a legal penalty. Executions in Singapore are carried out by long drop hanging,and usually take place at dawn. Thirty-three offences—including murder,drug trafficking,terrorism,use of firearms and kidnapping—warrant the death penalty under Singapore law.
Woo Bih Li is a Singaporean lawyer who has been serving as a judge of the Supreme Court of Singapore since 2003.
Tay Yong Kwang is a Singaporean judge of the Supreme Court. He was first appointed Judicial Commissioner in 1997,appointed Judge in 2003,and appointed Judge of Appeal in 2016. He was noted for being the presiding judge in several notable cases that shocked the nation and made headlines in Singapore.
Lai Kew Chai was a Singaporean judge and the longest-serving member of the Supreme Court Bench,having served for almost 25 years as a Judge.
Yong Vui Kong is a Malaysian who was sentenced to death in Singapore for trafficking more than 15 grams of heroin in 2007. His sentence was reduced to life imprisonment and caning as a result of Singapore's amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Act.
On the early morning of 31 May 2001,17-year-old national footballer Sulaiman bin Hashim,along with his two friends were attacked by a group of eight youths from gang 369,known as Salakau,as they were walking along South Bridge Road,Clarke Quay,Singapore. Sulaiman was grievously assaulted by the gang while his two friends managed to escape. During the assault,Sulaiman sustained 13 stab wounds and two of them were fatal;he died as a result. The case was classified as murder and within the next 13 months,six of the gang members involved were arrested and eventually sentenced to jail and caning for culpable homicide,rioting and voluntarily causing grievous hurt. However,till today,the remaining two assailants were never caught.
The 2010 Kallang slashings refer to a series of four robberies committed by a group of four Malaysians from Sarawak,Malaysia in the night of 29 May 2010 and the early hours of the morning of 30 May 2010,mostly around Kallang Area,Singapore. In the robberies,there were a total of four victims –the first three victims were seriously injured and hospitalised while a fourth victim was killed.
On 6 June 1994,two Japanese tourists were robbed and attacked by two men in their shared room in the Oriental Hotel in Singapore. One of them was brutally assaulted and died,while the other survived. The case,known as the Oriental Hotel murder,was classified as murder by the police. The perpetrators were eventually caught 2 years later and they were subsequently sentenced to serve lengthy jail terms with caning for their part in the robbery and assault of the two tourists,as well as for unrelated offences committed before their arrests.
The President's Pleasure (TPP) in Singapore was a practice of indefinite imprisonment formerly applied to offenders who were convicted of capital offences but were below the age of 18 at the time of their crimes. Such offenders were not sentenced to death in accordance with the death penalty laws in Singapore;they were instead indefinitely detained by order of the President of Singapore. This is similarly practised contemporarily for offenders who were of unsound mind when they committed their crimes,who are thus indefinitely detained at prisons or medical facilities in Singapore.
On the early morning of 21 April 1999,a 55-year-old former police officer named T. Maniam was ambushed by two men who used weapons to brutally beat him to death on the road between his house and his neighbour's home in Phoenix Garden,Singapore. His death was witnessed by his elder stepdaughter and one of his neighbours,together with the neighbour's maid. Following police investigations,three suspects,including Maniam's second wife Julaiha Begum,were arrested for the alleged murder,and the remaining two suspects,Loganatha Venkatesan and Chandran Rajagopal,were identified to be the men seen at the scene of crime.
The Orchard Towers double murders was the case of two deaths occurring at Balmoral Park,Singapore,before the victims' bodies were discovered at a carpark in Orchard Towers,thus the title of the case. The victims were 46-year-old Kho Nai Guan and Kho's 29-year-old Chinese girlfriend Lan Ya Ming,and they were both murdered by Kho's British employer Michael McCrea. McCrea was assisted by his girlfriend Audrey Ong Pei Ling in disposing of the bodies before they both fled Singapore to Australia,where they were caught.
Life imprisonment is a legal penalty in Singapore. This sentence is applicable for more than forty offences under Singapore law,such as culpable homicide not amounting to murder,attempted murder,kidnapping by ransom,criminal breach of trust by a public servant,voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons,and trafficking of firearms,in addition to caning or a fine for certain offences that warrant life imprisonment.
On 2 November 1980,two people –31-year-old fish dealer Lee Cheng Tiong and 16-year-old Teo Keng Siang –were brutally murdered by one or more unknown assailants. The murders remained unsolved for two years before a suspect was finally nabbed in connection to the killings.
On the early morning of 10 May 1998,at a coffee shop in Geylang,40-year-old prison warden Jaranjeet Singh,a Sikh Singaporean,was attacked by two men,one of whom was earlier involved in a quarrel with a prostitute he engaged,for allegedly staring at them. During the attack,Jaranjeet was stabbed on the throat by one of the men using a broken beer bottle,causing Jaranjeet to bleed to death since the broken bottle had cut through a major blood vessel at his neck. Within the same month of his murder,the two attackers,Saminathan Subramaniam and S. Nagarajan Kuppusamy,both 38 years old,were arrested and charged with murder.
On 1 July 2007,29-year-old Manap Sarlip was found murdered outside his flat at Whampoa,Singapore. The police investigations led to the arrest of the killer,17-year-old Muhammad Nasir Abdul Aziz,and Manap's 24-year-old wife Aniza Essa,who ordered and manipulated Nasir to kill Manap. Both of them were charged with murder and abetment of murder respectively. It was revealed that Aniza,who was in an unhappy marriage with Manap due to his abusive behaviour,had an affair with Nasir,who fell deeply in love with her and therefore,Aniza instigated Nasir to help kill her husband under the pretext that they would end up together without Manap. Subsequently,as a result of depression,Aniza was sentenced to jail for nine years after pleading guilty to manslaughter. As for Nasir,he was found guilty of murder but was imprisoned indefinitely under the President's Pleasure since his age of 17 allowed him to escape the death penalty for murdering Manap.
