Christian Li (born 30 October 2007) is an Australian violinist. In 2018, at the age of ten, he became the youngest to win the Junior Category of the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists. [1]

Biography

Christian Li was born in Australia to Chinese parents. His mother, Katherine Liu, who is a first-generation immigrant from China, is an accountant. His father, George Li, who is a second-generation Chinese born and raised in the United States, is an electrical engineer. [2] Christian Li attended Scotch College in Hawthorn, Melbourne until early 2022. [3] He currently studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School. [4] He began playing violin when he was 5 years old. [2] As of 2020, he was studying music with Robin Wilson, head of violin at Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne. [5]

In June 2013, when Li had been learning to playing the violin for 8 months, he appeared in a Chinese television commercial playing his violin, along with Jacky Cheung. [6]

In 2014, Li won first place in the Golden Beijing violin competition. In 2015, he placed first in the violin category of the Young Artist Semper Music International Competition in Italy. [7] In 2018, he won the junior prize at the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists, alongside Chloe Chua of Singapore. [8] [9] At age 10, he was the youngest winner in the history of the competition. [10] [9] In addition, he also won the Audience Prize and Composer Award in the Junior section. [11]

In 2016, he performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the American Protégé Showcase 10th Anniversary concert. [12] He has performed with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, [13] at the Gower Festival, the Harrogate International Festival, and the Cheltenham Music Festival. [14] In 2019, he suffered a bloody nose during a centre stage performance with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra which did not stop him from finishing his performance without a break. [15]

In 2020 he signed with Decca Classics at the age of 12 and became the youngest musician to sign with the label; [16] he released his first single the same year. [17]

The Shanghai Quartet is a string quartet that formed in 1983. The quartet is made up of: first violinist Weigang Li, second violinist Angelo Xiang Yu, violist Honggang Li, and cellist Nicholas Tzavaras. On November 20, 2020 the ensemble announced the newest member, Angelo Xiang Yu. The Shanghai Quartet accepted the resignation of former second violinist Yi-Wen Jiang on March 17, 2020. The group's tours have included North America, South America, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. The Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists is an international music competition for violinists under the age of 22. It was founded by Yehudi Menuhin in 1983 with the goal of nurturing young violinists. In its early years, the competition took place in Folkestone on the south coast of England. Since 1998, it has been held biennially in different cities around the world. Several of the competition's past laureates, including Julia Fischer, Tasmin Little, and Nikolaj Znaider, have gone on to major international careers.

He is also the second prize winner in the senior division of the 2014 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists in Austin, Texas. In April 2016, he had made a debut at Carnegie Hall at the Weill Recital Hall with the Danish National Symphony conducted by Fabio Luisi.

Kevin Zhu is an American concert violinist. He is a recipient of the 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant and was the first prize winner of the 55th edition of the International Paganini Competition in Genoa, Italy, aged just 17. He was also the first prize winner in the junior division of the 2012 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists in Beijing, China. In 2019, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall at Weill Recital Hall.

Stephen Waarts is a Dutch American violinist. He was the first prize winner in the senior division of the 2014 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists in Austin, Texas. He was also the fifth prize winner of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, Belgium.
