"Christmas in New York" is a Christmas song written by Billy Butt at the piano of the Church of Sweden in New York in 1979. [1] It was recorded by John Wesley Shipp and released as a single in 1982, with "The Christmas Song" on its B-side. [2]

The English-language version was performed annually between 1986 and 2002 by The Rockettes during the Radio City Christmas Spectacular in New York City. [3] Lyrically, the song describes New York City in Christmas time. [4] It was recorded by Loa Falkman, as "It's Christmas in New York", on his 1990 Christmas album Julstämning . [5] US jazz singer Linda Bianchi covered it on her 2009 Christmas album, Christmas in New York . [6]

The Swedish-language version, recorded by the Glennmarks Family on the 1983 holiday album, Från advent till jul , is called "Jul i Gamla stan", [7] with lyrics by Monica Forsberg reflecting Christmas in Stockholm's gamla stan. It was covered by (among others) Sten & Stanley [8] (1986), Jan Malmsjö (1987), [9] Hasse Andersson (1996) [10] and Cyndee Peters (1986). [11]

Nu tändas tusen juleljus, is a Christian traditional Swedish language Christmas song, written in 1898 by the Swedish song text writer Emmy Köhler. Translated into English, the title literally means "Now are lit a thousand Christmas candles". The theme of the song is the gospel of the newborn Christ and specifically its aspects of domestic harmony and inner peace, brought by the lights of candles as well as of the stars above, most importantly the star of Bethlehem. The song text is, in an astronomical aspect, about the Sun and what it the Sun means for the life on Earth. The song text also describes how the dusk falls and the night arrives to the town. But it's also a love song about making a darling happy. The song is on the singer Elisabeth Andreassons 1981 album "Angel of the Morning". The song has later been sung by many artists, sometimes with a changed text. In 1986 Trygve Henrik Hoff wrote a Norwegian language text: Det skal lyse en sol, which Sissel Kyrkjebø sang. The Sissel Kyrkjebø version was on the Sveriges Radio hitlist Svensktoppen for 17 rounds, during the period 8 November 1987-6 March 1988, with 4th place as best result there.

Kristina från Vilhelmina is a song written by Rune Wallebom, and originally recorded by Sven-Ingvars and released as a single in March 1966. The same month, the song was also included on the band's EP record Fyra hits. This version was tested for Svensktoppen, where it stayed for 12 weeks during the period 4 June-20 August 1966, and also topped the chart. Sven-Ingvars also did a 1990 re-recording for the album På begäran.

"När det lider mot jul", also known as "Det strålar en stjärna", is a Swedish Christmas song with lyrics by Jeanna Oterdahl, and written for vocals and piano in 1909 by Ruben Liljefors. A version for mixed choir, a cappella, was added in 1933 and originally published in 1944 by Gehrmans musikförlag. The song’s later popularity is said to have been affected by publication in Gottfrid Berg’s Läroverkskören 1950 and after being recorded on record, it was heard in TV in the early 1960s.

"I kväll jag tänder ett ljus" is a Christmas song with lyrics and music by Ingvar Hellberg. With lyrics referring to childhood, it references snowy Christmases, probably on the Earth's Northern Hemisphere. It also uses some older Swedish grammar, with the lines och nu när snöflingor falla i julnatten lång.
