Christopher Thornberg is an economist, public speaker, and the founding partner of Beacon Economics, LLC, an independent research and consulting firm. He is also director of the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development. [3]

Education and early career

Thornberg is a native of Rochester, New York. [4] He graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1989 with a B.S. in Business Administration from the School of Management. He then attended the UCLA Anderson School of Management where he received his Ph.D in Business Economics in 1997. He first started his career as an economics professor at Clemson University. Soon though, he moved back to UCLA where he researched under the university’s economic forecasting center. [5]

Work

Thornberg has served on the advisory board of Wall Street hedge fund Paulson & Co. Inc. Between 2008 and 2012, he served as a chief economic advisor to the California State Controller's Office and served as Chair of State Controller John Chiang’s Council of Economic Advisors.

David Andrew Berg is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he played college baseball for the UCLA Bruins baseball team. He was named an All-American and Pac-12 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year in 2013. He set a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) record for saves in a single season with 24. The Texas Rangers selected Berg in the 17th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. He did not sign with the Rangers and returned to UCLA for his senior season. He was then drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He left professional baseball in 2018 without ever playing in the major leagues.

His academic research draws on cognitive science and social psychology to better understand such problems as how people understand the causes of problems like homelessness or poverty, how advocates can best deal with the consequences of racial and other stereotypes, and how large bureaucracies can better respond to the needs of poor people and people living with disabilities.

The Gerald Loeb Award is given annually for multiple categories of business reporting. Lifetime Achievement awards are given annually "to honor a journalist whose career has exemplified the consistent and superior insight and professional skills necessary to contribute to the public's understanding of business, finance and economic issues." Recipients are given a hand-cut crystal Waterford globe "symbolic of the qualities honored by the Loeb Awards program: integrity, illumination, originality, clarity and coherence." The first Lifetime Achievement Award was given in 1992.
