The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 250,000 copies in the United States. [7] In its second week, the album fell to number three on the Billboard 200, selling 115,000 copies. [8] In its third week, Clones fell to number six on the US chart with 81,000 copies, for a three-week total of 450,000 units. [9] The album sold over 500,000 domestically, and has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

The Neptunes are an American songwriting and production duo composed of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, formed in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in 1992. Williams often provides additional vocals on records and appears in the duo's music videos, while Hugo tends to stay behind the scenes.
N.E.R.D. is an American hip hop and rock band, who originally formed as the rap group The Neptunes in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in 1989. The Neptunes were signed by Teddy Riley to Virgin. After producing songs for several artists throughout the late 1990s, the group decided to form a band version of The Neptunes group called N.E.R.D. in 1999. N.E.R.D.'s debut album, In Search Of..., sold 603,000 copies in the United States and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was also awarded the second annual Shortlist Music Prize. The band's second album, Fly or Die, sold 412,000 copies in the United States, but shipped at least 500,000 units, certifying it Gold.

Best known for their appearance on the 2003 Star Trak Entertainment compilation The Neptunes present Clones, with the song "Half Steering...", they also provided backing instruments for N.E.R.D.'s 2002 debut In Search Of.... Their major label debut, Sitting Around Keeping Score, was the first rock album to be released on The Neptunes' Star Trak label. In 2014, the band released their second album, Memphis independently. Additionally, all four members have provided session work and touring support for other artists including N.E.R.D, Paramore, Snoop Dogg, Kelis, and Mike Doughty.
