Coleg Gwent (English: Gwent College) is Wales' largest further education college[ citation needed ] at various locations in the former county of Gwent, South Wales. [3]

Contents

As of 2014, it has 24,000 students [4] ranging from secondary school leavers to mature students. A wide range of part-time and full-time academic and vocational courses are on offer at the college.

Campuses

The college operates from five campuses [5] – City of Newport, Crosskeys, Usk, Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone in Ebbw Vale, [6] and the Torfaen Learning Zone (a £24 million purpose-built campus, in Cwmbran). [7]

There are also two 'Learn-IT' centres, based in Monmouth and Cwmbrân. These offer flexible, drop-in courses on a range of Information Technology subjects as well as marketing, maths, English language and Welsh language.[ citation needed ]

The college's administrative headquarters are located at the Usk campus.[ citation needed ]

Pontypool campus originally closed in 2020 but was reopened when it became apparent that there was not enough space for all the apprentices on the Newport campus. After the 2023 summer term, Pontypool campus closed permanently. [8]

Collaboration

The college works in collaboration with the five local education authorities in South East Wales to provide an extensive curriculum designed to meet the needs of learners of all ages.[ citation needed ]

Student support

Coleg Gwent has a range of learner services to help support students. These include a library, computer and information resources, and a Students' Union.[ citation needed ]

Vocational training

The college also has a range of vocational training facilities. These include a training restaurant and hair and beauty salons at the Crosskeys campus (virtual tour available), Ebbw Vale, Newport and Pontypool. There are also workshops for students studying engineering and construction.[ citation needed ]

In addition, Usk campus offers agricultural courses and has a working farm (virtual tour available), equestrian centre and animal care centre on its premises.[ citation needed ]

Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw is a Welsh-medium all age school located in Trevethin, Pontypool in Torfaen, Wales and named for Saint Gwynllyw. The school had 926 pupils on roll in 2017. The school changed its name from ‘Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw’ to ‘Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw’ in 2022 to incorporate going from a High School to an all age school, the first in South East Wales.

The Afon Lwyd or Afon Llwyd is a 13-mile (21 km) long river in south-east Wales which flows from its source northwest of Blaenavon, through Abersychan, Pontnewynydd, Pontypool, Llanfrechfa and Cwmbran before flowing, at Caerleon, into the River Usk, which subsequently flows into the Bristol Channel to the south of Newport.

The Gwent County League is a football league in South Wales, consisting of 3 divisions, named the Premier Division, Division One and Division Two. The Premier Division is a feeder to the Ardal Leagues, and therefore sits at tier 4 of the Welsh football pyramid.

Coleg Gwent - Crosskeys is the largest campus of Coleg Gwent. It is located next to Risca Road in Crosskeys, near Newport in Wales. The college was previously a technical college and a coal mining college. However, since the demise of heavy industry in the area over the past decades, the college has now become the leading further education establishment in the area.

The North Gwent Deanery, a Roman Catholic deanery in the Archdiocese of Cardiff in Wales, covers several churches in North Gwent and the surrounding area. In the early 2000s, the Head of the Valleys deanery was split. The churches in its western part, in the county boroughs of Merthyr Tydfi and Rhondda Cynon Taf, became part of the Pontypridd Deanery and the churches in its eastern part, in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, became part of the North Gwent Deanery.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) is the local health board of NHS Wales for Gwent, in the south-east of Wales. Headquartered in Caerleon, the local health board (LHB) was launched in October 2009 through the merger of Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust and Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Torfaen, and Monmouthshire LHBs. It is named after Aneurin Bevan, a Member of Parliament who represented the area and who was the Minister of Health responsible for the foundation of the National Health Service.
