Columnea is a genus of ca. 200 species of epiphytic herbs and shrubs in the flowering plant family Gesneriaceae, native to tropical America and the Caribbean. The tubular or oddly shaped flowers are usually large and brightly colored – usually red, yellow, or orange – sometimes resembling a fish in shape. The Field Elm cultivar Ulmus minor'Microphylla Purpurea' was first described by C. de Vos, Handboek, 203, 1887.

The Field Elm cultivar Ulmus minor 'Microphylla Rubra' was listed by C. de Vos in Handboek, 203, 1887, as Ulmus campestris microphylla rubra but did not include a description.

In the southern part of México, specifically Campeche and Mérida, the local name is Frescura. The plant belongs to the family Urticaceae. It has light green, almost succulent, stems and tiny 1/8" leaves which contribute to its other nickname, "Artillery Fern", though it is not related to ferns.
