Cory Allen (born February 22, 1982) is an author, podcast host, musician, composer, and mastering engineer. On his podcast The Astral Hustle, he speaks with experts in mindfulness, neuroscience, and philosophy. [1] Allen writes about mindfulness, meditation, and self-development. [2] Music released under his own name is usually categorized as minimal avant-garde composition and has been described as 'clever and intricate structures that will repay the careful ear.' [3]

In 2015, Cory began hosting a podcast called The Astral Hustle. [4] The show has had millions of downloads [5] and was featured in The New York Times. [6]

Allen authored a book on modern mindfulness and meditation titled Now Is the Way (2019, Penguin Random House). [7]

Quiet Design

In 2007, Cory Allen and Mike Vernusky came together as co-owners and co-curators of the avant-garde record label Quiet Design. The highly acclaimed label has released works by over 30 artists in 10 countries. Some notable Quiet Design artists are Tetuzi Akiyama, Alvin Lucier, Jandek, Keith Rowe, Sebastien Roux, Erdem Helvacioglu, Duane Pitre, Yoshio Machida, Kim Myhr, Mark Cetilia and Nick Hennies. Crucifix was an American hardcore punk band from the San Francisco Bay Area, active from 1980 to 1984. They were among the most popular acts of the San Francisco punk scene of the early 1980s. Fronted by Cambodian-born singer Sothira Pheng, Crucifix were distinct among American underground bands for their strong D-beat musical characteristics and anarchist lyrical content and graphic design. The band's debut 1983 full-length album Dehumanization on Crass Records‘ offshoot Corpus Christi Records, is considered by many critics and fans to be a cornerstone of political punk music. After their breakup, Crucifix’s members went on to form the bands Loudspeaker and Proudflesh.

Colorblind James Experience were an American alternative roots/pop/rock band founded in 1980 in Rochester, New York, United States. Bandleader and singer/songwriter/guitarist "Colorblind" James Charles Cuminale was originally from Rochester, New York, but assembled early versions of what would become the Experience in Oswego, New York, before relocating to San Francisco, California. After a couple years of mixed results there, the band regrouped and moved again, this time back to Rochester which remained its home base until Cuminale's premature death in 2001. The band enjoyed brief fame in the UK and Europe after BBC DJ John Peel gave the Experience some exposure. Their "Dance Critters" single reached number 10 on the UK Indie Chart, while their albums Colorblind James Experience and Why Should I Stand Up reached numbers 5 and 13 respectively.

The 5uu's were an American avant-rock group founded in Los Angeles, California in 1984 by drummer-composer Dave Kerman. The group released their first album in 1986 and recorded a second in 1988 with Motor Totemist Guild, a similar band from the area. The two groups merged in 1988 to form U Totem and made two albums. When U Totem split up in 1994, the 5uu's reformed and went on to make two more albums. In 2000 the band became known as Dave Kerman/5uu's and released a further two albums under this name. After a long pause, an album, The Quiet In Their Bones was released in 2022.

Gene Rains is a vibraphonist and leader of the Gene Rains Group, a jazz quartet from Hawaii that played a musical style known as Exotica. Rains' short career spanned the early to the mid-1960s and consisted of 4 LP recordings released on Decca Records and the Vocalion label. These LPs were released during the golden era of Hawaiian and Exotica music and the Tiki culture in the United States. The Gene Rains Group repertoire featured popular Hawaiian and Polynesian Island melodies as well as popular American tunes of the era.

Mike Vernusky is an American composer, performer and record label owner. He writes music for concertized, theatrical, and filmic environments, primarily through the use of electronic media and live performance. His music has been described as "brash" by the New York Times and 'isolationist ambient' by Wire Magazine. In addition to having his works performed globally, Vernusky has made numerous speaking appearances about the urgency of artistic entrepreneurism including the EMS 2010 Festival in Shanghai and as a regular guest at El Centro Mexicano para la Musica y Artes Sonoras in Morelia, Mexico.
