Critical hours

Critical hours for radio stations is the time from sunrise to two hours after sunrise, and from two hours before sunset until sunset, local time. During this time, certain American radio stations may be operating with reduced power as a result of Section 73.187 of the Federal Communications Commission's rules. [1]

Canadian restricted hours are similar to critical hours, except that the restriction results from the January 17, 1984, U.S.-Canadian AM Agreement. Canadian restricted hours are called "critical hours" in the U.S.-Canadian Agreement, but in the AM Engineering database, the FCC calls them "Canadian restricted hours" to distinguish them from the domestically defined critical hours. Canadian restricted hours is that time from sunrise to one and one-half hours after sunrise, and from one and one-half hours before sunset until sunset, local time. U.S. stations operate with restricted hours because of Canadian stations, and vice versa. [1]

Those radio stations that must lower their power during the critical hours are required to do so because this is when the propagation of radio waves changes from groundwave to skywave (at sunset) or vice versa (at sunrise). This can cause radio stations to be picked up much farther away, possibly causing interference with other stations on the same frequency or adjacent frequencies. [2] Usually stations operating under the restrictions of Critical Hours must sign off the air between the end of the evening critical hours and the beginning of the morning critical hours. In effect, permission to operate during critical hours gives daytime-only stations a few more hours in their broadcast day. This is especially important in autumn and winter, when these stations might otherwise need to be off the air during the important morning and afternoon drive times, when AM radio listening is at its highest.

It airs Christian talk radio programming from Costa Mesa, California to Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. The station broadcast at 10,000 Watts sunrise to sunset at 740 kHz. On 28 February 2013, when KBRT moved to a new transmitter site near Corona, California; started broadcasting at 50,000 watts sunrise to sunset; and had the city of license changed to Costa Mesa. The studio and business offices remain located in Costa Mesa. KBRT is a Class D station broadcasting on the Canadian clear-channel frequency of 740 AM. CFZM in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is the dominant North-American station on 740 AM.

WIOO, known as "Country Gold FM & AM", WIOO - AM is a 15,000-watt daytime radio station licensed to Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It broadcasts on 1000 kHz which is simulcast on FM 97.9 MHz with full-time service. WIOO signed on the air in 1965. FM service was added in the summer of 2009. The call letters stand for the station's former long-time slogan, "W-100," referring to its position on the AM dial.

KRKS (AM)

KRKS is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Denver, Colorado. The station is owned and operated by Salem Communications and it airs a Christian talk and teaching radio format. Its studios and offices are located on South Vaughn Way in Aurora, with the AM transmitter located on East 56th Avenue in North Washington. KRKS is simulcast with co-owned 94.7 KRKS-FM. Together, they are known as "94.7 The Word."

KKOH is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Reno, Nevada. KKOH airs a News/Talk radio format under ownership and operation of Cumulus Media. Studios and offices are on East Plumb Lane, while it broadcasts from a three-tower transmitter facility off Chickadee Drive.

WHYL

KIHU is a Catholic radio formatted radio station licensed to Tooele, Utah, United States. The station is owned by Immaculate Heart Media, Inc.. The station has a construction permit from the FCC for a power increase to 50,000 watts Daytime, 42,000 watts Critical Hours and 194 watts night. The facilities authorized by the Construction Permit were built in 2004 and the station is operating under "Program Test Authority" with those facilities. Not only does the station have a construction permit to change its power, it also has an application to move its city of license to Magna, near where its current transmitter lies. The change in city of license will make possible the upgrading of the station from Class "D" to Class "B."

WQFX (AM)

WQFX is a radio station in Gulfport, Mississippi broadcasting a religious format. It is a daytime-only radio station broadcasting on a frequency of 1130 kilohertz.
