Damala Hagare (Somali : Damala Xagare) is a town in the Sanaag region of maakhir state of Somalia.

Recent History

In November 2005, the Sanaag region was reported to be experiencing water shortages, and Damala Hagare was one of the worst affected areas. [2]

In March 2013, a peace conference between the Warsangali and Dhulbahante clans was held in Damara Hagare. [3]

In September 2014, Somaliland's Defense Minister attempted to attend a meeting of the Warsangali clans in Hingalol, but was unable to do so and was stranded in Damara Hagale. [4]

In May 2019, Somaliland and Puntland troops clashed in Damala Hagare. [5] The total number of dead on both sides is estimated at nine. [6] In June, the Somaliland army deployed troops, including armored vehicles, to Yubbe, Hadaftimo, and Damala Hagare for border security from Puntland. [7]

In September 2019, the local community of Damala Hagare passed a resolution against charcoal production, which causes environmental damage. [8]

Demographics

The city of Damala Hagare is unique. It is a city split into two towns or settlements. One is primarily inhabited by the Dhulbahante, mainly the Naleye Ahmed sub-lineage of the Mohamoud Garad. [9] The second settlement is mainly inhabited by the Warsangeli clans. [10]

Ahmed Abdi Mohamud Sugulle "Habsade" is a Puntland and Somaliland politician. He was a decorated Colonel in the Somali Armed Forces and the second in command of the Somali Custodial Corps equivalent to that of the Italian Arma dei Carabinieri but the Custodial Corps fall under the Ministry of the Interior and are part of the Police Force. A politician and respected elder later in life (he was instrumental in the founding of Somaliland and became the Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives. In 1998, he was appointed Minister of the Interior of Puntland but was dismissed in 2007 after a conflict with Mohamud Muse Hersi, who became President of Puntland in 2006. In 2007, he brought Somaliland troops into Las Anod, leading to Somaliland's effective control of the Sool region. He served as various Somaliland Ministers of state from 2008. In 2014, Abdiweli Gaas became President of Puntland and he come back to Puntland.
