Dan Ashley is an American journalist. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1985 with degrees in English and Speech Communication. He is an anchor of ABC7 (KGO-TV) San Francisco Bay Area News.

Ashley came to ABC7 in 1995 as the weekday 5:00 p.m. news anchor and investigative reporter. One year later, in 1996, he was promoted to the anchor of the 6:00 and 11:00 broadcasts in addition to the 5:00 newscast. [1]

Career as a journalist

In June 1996, Ashley replaced anchor Richard Brown on the 6 & 11pm news broadcasts. [2]

In February 2013, Ashley was given an inside look at the White House while there for a 1-on-1 interview With President Barack Obama. [3]

Other notable interviews conducted by Ashley include George W. Bush, General Colin Powell, [4] Rob Reiner, [5] Tom Brokaw, [6] Rahm Emanuel, [7] and Ben Carson. [8]

Ashley is the longest-tenured main male news anchor in the history of ABC7 (KGO-TV) in San Francisco. [9]

When Hurricane Hugo struck Charleston, SC in 1989, Ashley was the last broadcaster to remain on the air covering the events. [10]

In 2005, he reported from Poland on the March of the Living with Bay Area holocaust survivors. [11]

Awards

During his news tenure in Charleston, Ashley received the prestigious DuPont Columbia and the Edward R. Murrow Awards. [12]

In 2015, Ashley was inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences San Francisco/Northern California Chapter . [12]

Ashley has won numerous Emmy Awards for his reporting, anchoring, and producing as well as a National Emmy Nomination for reporting. [13] [14] [15]

Philanthropy

Friends of Camp Concord (FOCC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Camp Concord, located in South Lake Tahoe. Ashley is on the board of directors [16] and hosts an annual golf tournament fundraiser for the group. [17]

Dan Ashley's Rock The CASA is an annual benefit concert to raise funding and awareness for both CASA of Contra Costa County and Friends of Camp Concord. [18]

In 2015, Ashley became the Chairman of the board of directors for Music In Schools Today (MUST) [19] He also serves on the boards of the Bay Area American Red Cross, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Contra Costa County, and the Commonwealth Club of California. [9]

In 2023, Dan was elected to the Board of Visitors for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his alma mater and hometown. [20]

Personal life

Ashley is a singer/songwriter who leads his own Americana/Rock band whose members include widely recognized and accomplished touring musicians. [21]

Ashley was once a figure skating instructor. [22]

Ashley is married to his wife, Angela, and has two grown sons and three grown stepsons. [23]

Thomas John Brokaw is an American retired network television journalist and author. He first served as the co-anchor of The Today Show from 1976 to 1981 with Jane Pauley, then as the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News for 22 years (1982–2004). In the previous decade he served as a weekend anchor for the program from 1973 to 1976. He is the only person to have hosted all three major NBC News programs: The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and, briefly, Meet the Press. He formerly held a special correspondent post for NBC News.

KGO-TV is a television station licensed to San Francisco, California, United States, serving as the San Francisco Bay Area's ABC network outlet. It has been owned and operated by the network's ABC Owned Television Stations division since the station's inception. KGO-TV's studios are located at the ABC Broadcast Center immediately west of The Embarcadero north of the city's Financial District, and its transmitter is located atop Sutro Tower. Carolyn Johnson is a California-based television anchor and reporter. She has co-anchored the noon and 6PM newscasts of KNBC-TV in Los Angeles since July 2014. Reynelda Muse is a former American television news anchor. In 1969 she became the first woman and first African American television news anchor in Colorado, co-anchoring a newscast at KOA-TV in Denver. In 1980 she was part of the first group of anchors on CNN. She is the winner of many awards, including an Emmy Award, and has been inducted into numerous halls of fame. The Reynelda Muse Television Journalism Scholarship, annually awarded to an African American student majoring in television journalism, was established in her honor by the Colorado Association of Black Journalists.

Dion Lim is an American news anchor and reporter for KGO-TV/ABC7. She is known for reporting on violence against Asian Americans.

Emerald Yeh is a well known philanthropist, a CNN News morning news anchor after serving as local primetime news anchor in Portland Oregon and later was longtime anchor for the local NBC affiliate KRON in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1984 to 2003, until KRON dropped the NBC affiliation and discontinued local news programming.
