[10] [11] He is known for hosting the voguing competition series Legendary [12] and for his appearances on the television series America's Best Dance Crew [13] and Pose . Early life

Wesley was born in Brooklyn, New York [16] and grew up in its Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. [19] He began dancing at age four. [20] Wesley first encountered voguing at 14 [21] and became involved with the ballroom scene as a teenager. [16]

Wesley has worked as a dance [7] [22] and vogue instructor. [23] [24]

Ballroom

Wesley became involved in ballroom as a teenager in the late 1990s [18] and has competed in balls frequently since then, [19] also hosting [18] and commentating at balls. [25] He began emceeing balls in 2003, [14] and first performed voguing "in front of a big crowd" in 2005 or 2006. [19] Wesley has been a member of a number of houses, including the House of Latex (which he joined in 2000), [19] the House of Evisu, [26] and the House of Lanvin, [27] in which he was a father. [28] [18] He is the founder [29] and father [30] of the House of Basquiat, which debuted on the second season of Legendary in 2021. [31] Along with the House of Garçons, he was featured in the 2023 Capital Pride parade in Washington, D.C. [32] [33]

He is a ballroom legend [34] and received icon status in 2018. [35]

Film and television

In 2009, Wesley competed on the fourth season [36] of America's Best Dance Crew as a member of the group Vogue Evolution. [37] In 2013, he appeared as a dancer [38] on Hit the Floor . [39] In 2015, Wesley appeared in the film Magic Mike XXL , [40] for which he also instructed Channing Tatum in voguing. [41] Later that year he was an ensemble member in The Wiz Live! [42] Wesley played Shadow Wintour (also known as Shadow Khan) [43] in seasons two [44] and three of Pose on FX. [19] In 2020, he was announced as the host of the HBO Max ballroom competition series Legendary , [45] and served as host and MC [46] over the show’s three seasons. [3] In 2022, he was featured in Billy Porter's [47] performance at the BET Awards. [48]

Music

In 2013, Wesley was featured as a dancer in the music video for Fergie's song "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)". [49] In 2015, he performed as a vogue dancer [50] and commentator for FKA Twigs' show "Congregata". [24] Wesley was a dancer for Rihanna's 2016 Anti world tour [51] and featured in Teyana Taylor's 2018 K.T.S.E. tour. [52] He also appeared in the music video for Taylor's song "Work this Pussy". Wesley is a member of MikeQ's label Qween Beat [53] [13] and was featured on the track "Walk" on its 2016 collection Qweendom. [54] In 2023, he was featured on the song "Giant Bird in a Man Suit" on the cast recording of the off-Broadway musical Lewberger: The Wizard of Friendship. [55]

The Ballroom scene is an African-American and Latino underground LGBTQ+ subculture. Its origins can be found in drag balls of the mid-19th century United States, such as those hosted by William Dorsey Swann, a formerly enslaved Black man in Washington D.C.. By the early 20th century, integrated drag balls were popular in cities such as New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. In the mid-20th century, as a response to racism in integrated drag spaces, the balls evolved into house ballroom, where Black and Latino attendees could "walk" in a variety of categories for trophies and cash prizes. Most participants in ballroom belong to groups known as "houses," where chosen families of friends form relationships and communities separate from their families of origin, from which they may be estranged. The influence of ballroom culture can be seen in dance, language, music, and popular culture, and the community still exists today.

Jameela Alia Jamil is a British actress, activist, podcaster, and television host and judge. She began her career on Channel 4, where she hosted a pop culture series in the T4 strand from 2009 until 2012. She then became the radio host of The Official Chart, and co-hosted The Official Chart Update alongside Scott Mills on BBC Radio 1. She was the first regular solo female presenter of the BBC Radio 1 chart show.

Tahliah Debrett Barnett, known professionally as FKA Twigs, is a British singer, songwriter, and dancer. She was a backup dancer for numerous musicians, and made her musical debut with EP1 (2012). Barnett's debut studio album, LP1 (2014), reached number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and number 30 on the US Billboard 200. It was nominated for that year's Mercury Prize. She released the EP M3LL155X (2015) and took a four-year hiatus, after which she released her second studio album, Magdalene (2019). After signing with Atlantic Records, she released the mixtape Caprisongs (2022). Her work has garnered acclaim and has been described as "genre-bending", drawing on various genres including electronic music, trip hop, R&B, and avant-garde.

Tamsier Joof Aviance or Tamsier Aviance is a British dancer, choreographer, actor, model, entrepreneur, radio presenter, and author. He took the name "Aviance" after joining the House of Aviance — one of the legendary vogue-ball houses in the United States. As well as appearing in several musicals, and as stage backing dancer for Mary Kiani, Take That and Janet Jackson, he was also known within the London voguing scene during the 1990s and is among the original London vogue dancers of that era.

Javier Ninja is an American vogue dancer and teacher. Madrid is a member of the Legendary House of Ninja founded by the late Willi Ninja and has worn the House Dance International vogue "Champion of the year" for three consecutive years. He is well known within the vogue dance world and has performed and taught in several countries including the U.S.

Ryan Heffington is an American dancer and choreographer based in Los Angeles. He was nominated for two Grammy Awards for choreographing the music videos for Arcade Fire's "We Exist" (2013) and Sia's "Chandelier" (2014), winning a VMA Award for the latter.

Maldonado introduced a new style of voguing which is more athletic and dramatic when she entered into the scene in early 2000s New York.

<i>My House</i> (2018 TV series) American TV series or program

My House is a documentary/reality series focusing on ball culture in New York City. It follows Tati 007, Alex Mugler, Jelani Mizrahi, Lolita Balenciaga, Relish Milan and the commentator Precious Ebony. The first of ten episodes premiered on Viceland on April 25, 2018.

"Fukk Sleep" is a song by American rapper ASAP Rocky featuring English singer FKA Twigs from the former's third studio album, Testing (2018). Produced by Hector Delgado, FnZ, Boi-1da, and Rocky, the track was released in 2018 alongside the album. The song was later given a video, directed by Diana Kunst.

The Royal House of LaBeija is the first ballroom house and was the first to host benefits to raise awareness during the 1980s HIV/AIDS epidemic. prominent drag family founded by Crystal LaBeija and Lottie LaBeija in 1968. Crystal and Lottie established the House of LaBeija in response to the racially oppressive drag pageant system of 1960s America. In 1972, Crystal & Lottie LaBeija presents: “The 1st Annual House of LaBeija Ball” at Up the Downstairs Case in Harlem, NY. This is thought to be the birth of house culture within the ballroom scene—as it is known today. Houses serve as alternative families, primarily for gay, gender nonconforming and transgender youth and others who feel ostracized from conventional support systems.

Hector Xtravaganza was a member of the House of Xtravaganza and well-known figure in the NYC ballroom life, entertainer, fashion stylist, and public advocate for HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ organizations.

<i>Legendary</i> (TV series) American reality competition television series

Legendary is an American voguing reality competition television series, exploring the world of ball culture. It premiered on HBO Max on May 27, 2020. The series follows LGBT house members—predominantly from eight to ten houses—as they navigate through nine balls, with US$100,000 prize for the winning house. As such, the series was praised by GLAAD for featuring queer and trans artists "from the New York ballroom scene."

It contains additional vocals by Serpentwithfeet, Angela Davis, and Jariuce "Jehreeus" Banks. Ty Dolla Sign, Skrillex, and BoogzDaBeast produced the song. According to Ty, the song expands on West's "Fade", which he was featured on alongside Post Malone. Initially previewed after the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2019, the former experienced an internet leak in March 2020.

<i>Caprisongs</i> 2022 mixtape by FKA Twigs

Caprisongs is the first mixtape by English singer-songwriter FKA Twigs. It was released on 14 January 2022 through Young and Atlantic Records. The mixtape features guest appearances from Pa Salieu, the Weeknd, Shygirl, Dystopia, Rema, Daniel Caesar, Jorja Smith, and Unknown T. The production is handled by el Guincho, who co-executive produced the mixtape alongside Twigs, as well as Arca, Cirkut, and Mike Dean, among others. The mixtape was supported by one single, "Tears in the Club", which features the Weeknd, and one promotional single, "Jealousy", which features Rema.
