The Academy Award for Best Film Editing is one of the annual awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Nominations for this award are closely correlated with the Academy Award for Best Picture. For 33 consecutive years, 1981 to 2013, every Best Picture winner had also been nominated for the Film Editing Oscar, and about two thirds of the Best Picture winners have also won for Film Editing. Only the principal, "above the line" editor(s) as listed in the film's credits are named on the award; additional editors, supervising editors, etc. are not currently eligible.
Lee Smith, ACE, is an Australian film editor who has worked in the film industry since the 1980s. He began his film career as a sound editor before establishing himself as an editor. His breakthrough came when he began collaborating with director Peter Weir. Smith is best known for his work on several of Christopher Nolan's films, including Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Interstellar (2014) and Dunkirk (2017), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.
Kami Asgar is an Iranian-American sound editor and film producer. He received an Academy Award nomination for his work on the film Apocalypto (2006), for which he became the first and only Middle Eastern to date to be nominated for Best Sound Editing.
Soundelux is an American audio post production company based in California, a previous member of the Todd Soundelux group of sound companies. The Soundelux library and trademark was bought in 2014 by Sounddogs. In 2021, original founders Bender and Stateman came together to launch the new Soundelux, which restarted in sound editing production with episodes of HBO's Euphoria.

Andy Nelson is a British re-recording mixer and sound engineer working in Los Angeles, California, United States. He has won two Academy Awards for Best Sound and has been nominated 24 times. He has worked on over 150 films since 1980. In addition to the Academy Awards, Nelson has won five BAFTA Award for Best Sound and has been nominated for eight more in the same category. He was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal in the Queen's 2001 New Year Honours List for his services to Australia society and Australian film production.
Ron Judkins is an American production sound mixer and writer-director. He has won two Academy Awards for Best Sound and has been nominated for another three in the same category. He is also the winner of the BAFTA Award for Best Sound for Schindler's List in 1996. Judkins directed his first feature film, The Hi-Line in 1998, and the project premiered in the Dramatic Competition at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
Paul Brincat is an Australian sound engineer. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Sound for the film The Thin Red Line. He has worked on more than 40 films since 1971. He won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing for his work on the television series Flipper.
Joe Walker is a British film editor working in Los Angeles. In 2022, he won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for his work on Dune, having been nominated twice before for 12 Years a Slave and Arrival. For the American Cinema Editors Award for Best Edited Feature Film – Dramatic he has received a string of five nominations over eight years and in 2016 he won, for Arrival. He took the European Film Award for Best Editor for Shame in 2012 and Satellite Award for Best Editing for Sicario in 2016.
George Watters II is an American retired sound editor with more than 80 feature film credits. He has won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing twice, for The Hunt for Red October (1990) and for Pearl Harbor (2001).
Mark Mangini is an American sound editor with over 125 film credits. He has won two Academy Awards, in 2021 for Best Sound for Dune and in 2015 for Best Sound Editing along with David White for their work on Mad Max: Fury Road.
Kim Roberts, A.C.E., is an American filmmaker who has worked primarily on documentaries as a film editor and writer. Roberts has a master's degree in documentary film production from Stanford University (1996). Her first credit as an editor was for Long Night's Journey into Day (2000), which was directed by Deborah Hoffmann and Frances Reid and that was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. She was credited as both an editor and writer for Great Wall Across the Yangtze (2000), which was directed by Ellen Perry. Her work since then and several of her honors are sketched in the filmography below. Roberts was featured in a New York Times article on film editing in 2012. She has been selected for membership in the American Cinema Editors, which entitles editors to append "A.C.E." to their film credits.
Andy "Frank" Wright is an Australian supervising sound editor. He is known for his work on the war-drama film Hacksaw Ridge directed by Mel Gibson, for which he received two Academy Award nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, Best Sound Editing and winning Best Sound Mixing (both shared with Robert Mackenzie).

Jonathan Amos is an English film and television editor. He has worked on TV series such as Spooks and Party Animals, New Street Law and feature films Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), 20,000 Days on Earth (2014), Paddington 2 (2017), and Baby Driver (2017). He has won the BAFTA Award for Best Editing and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film Editing. He was a co-editor on the 2018 film The Sisters Brothers.
Donald Sylvester is an American sound editor who has worked on over 100 films. He is best known for his work with James Mangold on the films Ford v Ferrari (2019), Logan (2017), 3:10 to Yuma (2007), and Walk the Line (2005). Sylvester won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing at the 92nd Academy Awards for Ford v Ferrari and BAFTA Award for Best Sound at the 59th British Academy Film Awards for Walk the Line. He has been a member of BAFTA since 2007.
Rachael Tate is a British sound editor in the film industry. She was nominated for an Academy Award and won a BAFTA Award for Best Sound for her work on the 2019 film 1917.
Mikkel E. G. Nielsen is a Danish film editor. In 2021, he won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for his work on the film Sound of Metal, becoming the first Danish film editor to win that honor.
