David Clark Salo is a swimming coach based in Southern California, United States. He was the head coach of the men's and women's swimming team at University of Southern California, as well as USC's club team, Trojan Swim Club. Prior to his becoming the USC coach in 2007, [1] he was the head coach of Irvine Novaquatics, [2] a position he held since the fall of 1990, and was head coach of Soka University of America's men's and women's swimming teams from 2003 to 2006. [3] He currently remains Novaquatics' General Manager.

He was hired as head coach of Novaquatics after a previous appointment with the University of Southern California, where he served as men's assistant coach under head coach Peter Daland. While at USC, Salo assisted with the sprint group while also serving as recruiting coordinator during his final two years at the university. During Salo's tenure the Trojans earned NCAA top five honours, taking second in 1986 and 1987. While head coach of the Irvine Novaquatics, Salo led his team to a number of age group championships (BC and Junior Olympic) as well as several Junior National Team Championships and the United States Swimming National Championships (Men, Women, Combined, Combined Under 18).

Along with team championships, Salo coached five swimmers – Amanda Beard, Aaron Peirsol, Jason Lezak, Gabrielle Rose, and Staciana Stitts – that represented the United States at the 2000 Olympic Games, winning five medals.

In 2003, Salo was director of aquatics and head coach at Soka University of America. [3]

In 2004, Salo coached Jason Lezak, Colleen Lanne', Gabe Woodward and Lenny Krayzelburg to the USA Olympic Team. He also served as assistant coach for the USA's men's team.

Australian freestyler Ian Thorpe trained with Salo in Summer 2006.[ citation needed ]

In 2012, Salo coached Jessica Hardy, Rebecca Soni, Ricky Berens, Eric Shanteau, and Haley Anderson to the USA Olympic Team, along with Katinka Hosszú to the Hungarian Team and Oussama Mellouli to the Tunisia Team. He was one of the assistant coaches. His relationship with Hosszú has been controversial; according to her, when she looked for advice during the 2012 Summer Olympics, Salo replied that she should worry because she "can always open a beauty salon"; after the incident, Hosszú left Salo and began training with Shane Tusup. Salo has also served as assistant coach for the USA Women's team in the 1999 Pan American Games as well as the 2000 Olympic Games and headed the Men's Team at the Goodwill Games in 2001 and the 2005 World Championship Team. He is now the associate head coach of Sun Devils at Arizona State University


Salo is a graduate of Long Beach State (B.A. and M.A.) and the University of Southern California (Ph.D.) [5]

Lindsay Dianne Benko, known by her married name Lindsay Mintenko since 2005, is an American former competition swimmer, two-time Olympian, former world record-holder, and a managing director of USA Swimming. She represented the United States women as a Team Captain at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, taking a gold medal in freestyle relays both years. She held the short-course world record in the 400-meter freestyle at 3:59.53, for nearly three years from January 2003 to December 2005.

Michael Jon O'Brien is an American former competition swimmer who won the gold medal in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle event at the 1984 Summer Olympics and a bronze and two golds in the Pan Am Games.

Diana MacManus is a female backstroke swimmer from the United States. As a member of the USA National team she competed at the 2001 Goodwill Games held in Brisbane, Australia where she won two silver medals. At the 2002 Short Course World Championships in Moscow, Russia where she brought home two more bronze medals.

Mike Bottom was a competitive swimmer at USC, a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, and the ninth head coach of the Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving program at the University of Michigan from 2008 to 2023.

Daland started Philadelphia's Suburban Swim Club around 1950, an outstanding youth program, which he coached through 1955, then served briefly as an Assistant Coach at Yale from 1955-56, where he was mentored by Olympic Coach and long serving Yale Head Coach Bob Kiphuth.

Charles Robison "Rob" Orr was the men's swim coach at Princeton University from 1979 to 2019 where he led the team to 23 Ivy League Championships. Teri McKeever was an American college and Olympic swimming coach. She was the head coach of the California Golden Bears women's swimming team at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1993 until her firing in 2023. Her Cal Bears teams have won four NCAA national championships. McKeever served as an assistant coach for the United States Olympic women's swim team three times, and as the head coach of the 2012 U.S. Olympic women's swim team.

Ron Turner is a retired USA Swimming National Team coach based in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Turner was the head coach of the Jiangsu Swimming Team in Nanjing, China, where he was the coach for Chinese National Team members, including Olympic Bronze Medalist Shi Jinglin.

Flora Kong Yan Kay is a Hong Kong former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. She represented Hong Kong, as a 15-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and later became a finalist in the 200 m butterfly at the 2002 Asian Games.

Catherine Kase born Catherine Vogt is an American Swimming coach and former athlete specializing in distance swimming. In 2016 Vogt was named Head Open Water Coach for the United States Olympic Swimming Team. In 2015 she served as Head Open Water Coach for the United States World Championship team. She is assistant head coach at the University of Southern California.

Dave Durden is an American swimming coach, best known for serving as the men's head coach at University of California, Berkeley since 2007.
