David Ogden, (born 1966 in Tring in Hertfordshire) is a conductor and composer, directing choirs, choral and church music workshops, courses and festivals in the UK and abroad.

Conducting

Between 1991 and 2002, he was Director of Music at Clifton Cathedral, Bristol, and from 1995 to 2001 he was Regional Director of the Royal School of Church Music for the South West and Midlands.

He conducts Exultate Singers, City of Bristol Choir, Royal Mail Choir, is the Head of the Bristol Choral Centre and Director of Music at Westbury-on-Trym parish church in Bristol. He was conductor of the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir from 2005 to 2014.

For over 25 years he has worked with numerous professional and amateur groups in many fields of music making, including concerts, musical theatre and opera, community projects, primary and secondary level educational workshops, from small children’s groups to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

In June 2015 he conducted a chorus of 130 singers from Bristol Youth Choir and City of Bristol Choir, members of the British Paraorchestra, South West OpenUp Orchestra, Elmfield School for the Deaf & Westbury-on-Trym CofE Academy Signing Buddies, Larkrise Special School and singer Victoria Oruwari in a performance at Bristol's Colston Hall as part of the first BBC Music Day. He has conducted choirs in the UK, the Philippines, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, South Korea, Thailand, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ghana.

Television and Radio

David Ogden has conducted choirs on BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the World Service including several broadcasts of Choral Evensong on BBC Radio 3 with RSCM Millennium Youth Choir, from Gloucester Cathedral in 2014, [2] St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol in 2013, [3] Bridlington Priory in 2011, [4] Arundel Cathedral in 2010, [5] Dunblane Cathedral in 2007, [6] Romsey Abbey in 2006, [7] and Beverley Minster in 2005. [8] He has also conducted several appearances on BBC Radio 4's Sunday Worship including services from Gloucester Cathedral in 2014, [9] St Peter de Merton Church in Bedford in 2012 [10]

He has worked as conductor, arranger and music adviser on many editions of BBC TV's Songs of Praise, including a live television broadcast co-ordinating simultaneous performances in Ghana and the UK in 2001.

He was Religious Music Adviser for series 1 to 5 of the BBC's drama series, Call the Midwife. [11]

David Ogden worked with the Royal Mail Choir in the BBC Two series The Choir: Sing While You Work. David conducted the choir for a charity single with X-Factor winner Joe McElderry in 2013 and on the 2013 Royal Mail Christmas TV advertisement. In 2014 the choir raised over £50,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. [12]

On 5 June 2015 he conducted a chorus of 130 singers from Bristol Youth Choir and City of Bristol Choir, members of the British Paraorchestra, South West OpenUp Orchestra, Elmfield School for the Deaf & Westbury-on-Trym CofE Academy Signing Buddies, Larkrise Special School and singer Victoria Oruwari in a performance at Bristol's Colston Hall as part of the first BBC Music Day. Composing

David Ogden writes music for churches and schools. Many of his pieces have been performed on radio and television, including his best known pieces: Song of Ruth, White Light Eucharist and the anthem, Christ has no body now but yours.

In April 2008 his piece Love's redeeming work is done was sung by a 250-strong choir in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI and a congregation of 40,000 as part of a Papal Mass in the Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium.

Awards

In 2006 he was appointed Associate of the Royal School of Church Music for his services to church music. In February 2015 the RSCM Council announced that it will award him its highest honour, Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music at ceremony in October 2015. [17]

His music has been recorded by many choirs, including Exultate Singers, City of Bristol Choir and the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir.

Leeds Minster Church in England

Leeds Minster, or the Minster and Parish Church of Saint Peter-at-Leeds,, in Leeds, West Yorkshire is a large Church of England foundation of major architectural and liturgical significance. A church is recorded on the site as early as the 7th century, although the present structure is a Gothic Revival one, dating from the mid-19th century. It is dedicated to Saint Peter and was the Parish Church of Leeds before becoming a Minster in 2012. It has been designated a grade I listed building by English Heritage.

Choir of St Johns College, Cambridge Collegiate choir

The Choir of St John's College, Cambridge is considered to be one of the finest collegiate choirs in the world. It is part of the English cathedral tradition, having been founded to sing the daily liturgy in the College Chapel, though it is set apart from other English choirs of this tradition by the frequent inclusion of Continental works in its repertoire and its emphasis on polyphonic interpretations. Alongside the choir of King's College, Cambridge, it is one of the two most famous collegiate choirs in Cambridge, having had over 90 recordings published.

The Choir of Leeds Minster is the choir of Leeds Minster, Leeds, England, which became a Minster in September 2012. The choir was founded by vicar, Richard Fawcett probably as early as 1815, and was certainly in existence by 1818. The church's choir - boys and men - was, from its origins, a charge on the church rate; and, in what was then a largely non-conformist town, a none-too-popular one. By the 1830s, the choir's resourcing had been taken over by a list of voluntary subscribers. On arrival as Vicar of Leeds in 1837, Walter Farquhar Hook said he found "the surplices in rags and the books in tatters". The Exultate Singers is a choir based in Bristol, UK, made up of 40 adult singers. It has mostly specialised in Christian sacred music.

Sarah MacDonald FRCO is a Canadian-born organist, conductor, and composer, living in the UK, and currently holds the positions of Fellow and Director of Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and Director of the girl choristers at Ely Cathedral. She has been at Selwyn since 1999, and is the first woman to hold such a post in an Oxbridge Chapel. In 2018 MacDonald was given the honorary award of Associate of the Royal School of Church Music (ARSCM).

Bristol Choral Society

Bristol Choral Society is a large mixed-voiced choir based in Bristol, England, founded in 1889. Currently conducted by Hilary Campbell, it has around 180 auditioned members. The choir stages at least three concerts annually at the Colston Hall in Bristol with professional orchestras and soloists, and another annually at Bristol Cathedral in addition to other performances and broadcasts in Bristol and further afield.

Evensong

Evensong is an evening church service following a set form that focuses on psalms and other biblical canticles, usually a sung rendition of vespers following the Anglican tradition. Old English speakers translated the Latin word vesperas as æfensang, which became 'evensong' in modern English. The term can still refer to the pre-Reformation form of vespers or services of evening prayer from other denominations.

Choral Evensong is the BBC's longest-running outside broadcast programme. The programme is a broadcast of the Anglican service of Choral Evensong live from cathedrals, university college chapels and churches throughout the UK.
