Dead Oceans is an American independent record label formed in 2007 and based in Bloomington, Indiana. [1]
In 2007, Phil Waldorf founded Dead Oceans with Chris Swanson. [2] Swanson suggested the name Dead Oceans, which came from the lyrics of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" (1963). [3] [4] Chris' brother Ben Swanson, Darius Van Arman, and Jonathan Cargill of Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar also helped to found the label. [5] [6] The label is part of Secretly Group. [7]
Some of the label's earliest releases include Phosphorescent's Pride, Dirty Projectors' Rise Above , and Akron/Family's Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free, ranging from folk to art punk to groove-y rock. [8] Dead Oceans has published Julianna Barwick, Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, Ryley Walker, The Tallest Man on Earth, Kevin Morby, Marlon Williams, Shame, and many others. [9]
In 2017, the label released shoegaze band Slowdive's first album in 22 years. [10] [11] [12]
In 2018, Dead Oceans was listed as #7 on Paste magazine's top-10 record labels of 2018. Jagjaguwar was listed as #4 and Secretly Canadian was listed as #8. [13]
Shoegaze is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume. It emerged in Ireland and the United Kingdom in the late 1980s among neo-psychedelic groups who usually stood motionless during live performances in a detached, non-confrontational state. The name comes from the heavy use of effects pedals, as the performers were often looking down at their pedals during concerts.

WBAR is the campus radio station of Barnard College in New York City. Currently streaming online-only, WBAR was developed as a freeform alternative to WKCR-FM on the Columbia University campus. Secretly Group is a family of American independent record labels based in Bloomington, Indiana. The group is made up of Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, and Dead Oceans. Secretly Canadian, the first of the labels, was formed in 1996 by brothers Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill. Their first release was a re-issue of an album by June Panic. Weddle later left to form label Family Vineyard; the remaining trio were joined by Darius Van Arman, as well as his label Jagjaguwar, in 1999. The two labels had worked closely before Jagjaguwar's offices moved to Bloomington to work alongside Secretly Canadian's.
