"Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" (English: "In the Name of Allah" or "Saying the Name of Allah") is a song recorded, composed and arranged by Indonesian musician, songwriter and record producer Dwiki Dharmawan. Taken from the his first special album of the same name, released in 1993, the song is written and co-produced by Ags. Arya Dipayana, [lower-alpha 1] and features vocals performed by Novia Kolopaking. It is primarily an Islamic-influenced pop song with keyboards and "choir"-like chorus, while the lyrics hint towards themselves do the better ways.

Contents

Considered as Kolopaking's signature song, "Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" boosted Dharmawan's popularity and was covered by many artists, in their different renditions, including singer Ita Purnamasari and the band Gigi. It was also used as the theme song for the film Regret (1995) directed by Sophan Sophiaan, and the television series Kabulkan Doaku (2000). An accompanying Islamic-themed music video for the song was later uploaded onto Musica Studios' YouTube channel in 2013, 21 years after its release. The song peaked at number seven on Aneka Top 13 Hits Indonesia in the chart issue dated 18 May 1993.

Background and composition

The song's composer, Dwiki Dharmawan, revealed that it was inspired by Ags. Arya Dipayana's poems that he read in 1989. Dharmawan and Arya Dipayana began writing "Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah", along with "Kepada Kesangsian", in 1990. [1] Singer Novia Kolopaking recorded the former in 1993. [2]

Musically, it is an Islamic song featuring dominant keyboards, "choir"-like chorus and "aesthetic" key modulation, with "meaningfully simplistic" lyrics vividly unravel themselves to do better things with better ways. [3] Kolopaking's vocal range spans from G3 to B4.

Critical reception

"Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" received widespread critical acclaim. [lower-alpha 2] Hera Diani of The Jakarta Post describing it the "most famous" song written by Dharmawan. [7] Susi Ivvaty, writing for Kompas , states that "Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" has still received airplays and subsequently been covered extensively by many artists in a variety of styles on most occasions. [8] Asti Prativi of IDN Times described this song has "meaningfully simplified" lyrics. [9] Joanna Purba of Rappler describes it as a song that always played at many shopping malls every Ramadan. [10]

Commercial performance

"Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" was peaked at number seven on Aneka Top 13 Hits Indonesia in the chart issue dated 18 May 1993, [11] boosting Dharmawan and Arya Dipayana's popularity. [12]

Live performances

Kolopaking sang the song on several occasions. [13] She and Dewi Gita both performed "Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" for performances in Semarak Takbir and TPI's Idul Fitri Concert on 8 and 10 February 1997, respectively. [14] Gita's performance included Addie MS' Twilite Orchestra as the accompaniment. [15] The song was also part of Kolopaking's solo concert Hati Matahari in 2011, accompanied by Matarantai orchestra. [16]

"Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" was covered in 1997 by Indonesian singer-songwriter Ita Purnamasari, whose husband Dwiki Dharmawan wrote and arranged the original version in 1992. [17]

She released it again, in a pop style by Dharmawan, on her album Spiritual Journey, released on 18 June 2015. [18]

In 2004, Indonesian band Gigi covered the song in an acoustic rock version, taken from the album Raihlah Kemenangan . While the original version recorded in the key of A-flat major with a tempo of 76 beats per minute, their version set in a time signature of 3

Live performances and promotion

Gigi promoted the album with a series of live performances on Indonesian concert tours. It became the set list of the band's Ngabuburit Tour. [20] In September 2008, the band sang the song at Pintu Surgamu, a collaborative concert of Gigi and Ungu. [21]

Since its original release, "Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" has spawned numerous other versions and been performed by numerous other singers.

"Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" was used as the theme song of the film Regret (1995) directed and co-written by Sophan Sophiaan, [28] and the television drama Kabulkan Doaku (2000), produced by Rapi Films. [29] On 13 June 2017, Indonesian singer-songwriter Vicky Prasetyo covered "Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" in a version with presenter Vega Darwanti, which posted on his Instagram account. Prasetyo stated that his voice was "sounded like Doraemon, rather than Armand Maulana". [30]

Collaborating Harmony: Dwiki Dharmawan is the first compilation album by Indonesian songwriter Dwiki Dharmawan. It was released by Sony Music on 6 February 2014, almost a year after his special album, Menembus Batas. Created as part of his thirtieth anniversary celebration, the album was inspired by Dharmawan's musical journey in Indonesian music over the years. It consists of twelve tracks that are mostly cover versions of Dharmawan's songs, along with three new songs written by him. Regret is a 1995 Indonesian independent Islamic teen drama film directed by Sophan Sophiaan, based on the short story of the same name by Ramdhan K. H. Produced by Sophiaan's own company Sinemasakini in association with Global Sarana Media Nusantara and Multi Permai Films, the film stars Widyawati and Sophiaan in their respective lead roles.

"Melangkah Di Atas Awan" is a song recorded by Indonesian singer and actor Ronnie Sianturi of Trio Libels, who provides the singing voice of Yudi. The song was first made available in the Indosiar musical television series of the same name on September 11, 1997, before it was officially released as a single of his compilation album of the same name in December 1997 through Musica Studios as the song's distributor. It marked Sianturi's first solo single in three years, since "Sudikah Kamu" (1994). Kabulkan Doaku is a 2000 Indonesian Ramadan family television series directed by Maman Firmansyah from a screenplay written by Bung SMAS. The series stars Adjie Massaid and Dian Nitami in their respective lead roles.
