Jackson,officially the City of Jackson,is the capital of and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The city is also one of two county seats of Hinds County,along with Raymond. The city had a population of 153,701 at the 2020 census,down from 173,514 at the 2010 census. Jackson's population declined more between 2010 and 2020 (11.42%) than any major city in the United States. Jackson is the anchor for the Jackson metropolitan statistical area,the largest metropolitan area completely within the state and the 10th largest urban area in the Deep South. With a 2020 population estimated around 600,000,metropolitan Jackson is home to over one-fifth of Mississippi's population. The city sits on the Pearl River and is located in the greater Jackson Prairie region of Mississippi.

Edythe Evelyn Gandy was an American attorney and politician who served as Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi from 1976 to 1980. A Democrat who held several public offices throughout her career,she was the first woman elected to a statewide constitutional office in Mississippi. Born in Hattiesburg,she attended the University of Mississippi School of Law as the only woman in her class. Following graduation,she took a job as a research assistant for United States Senator Theodore Bilbo. She briefly practiced law before being elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives,where she served from 1948 to 1952. Defeated for re-election,she worked as director of the Division of Legal Services in the State Department of Public Welfare and Assistant Attorney General of Mississippi until she was elected State Treasurer of Mississippi in 1959.
Jackson,MS Metropolitan Statistical Area is a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the central region of the U.S. state of Mississippi that covers seven counties:Copiah,Hinds,Holmes,Madison,Rankin,Simpson,and Yazoo. As of the 2010 census,the Jackson MSA had a population of 586,320. According to 2019 estimates,the population has slightly increased to 594,806. Jackson is the principal city of the MSA.
Patrick Hayes "Pete" Johnson Jr. is an American politician and lawyer who served as State Auditor of Mississippi from 1988 to 1992. Originally a Democrat,he joined the Republican Party in 1989,thus becoming the first Republican to hold statewide office in Mississippi since the Reconstruction era. He mounted an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 1991. He served as Federal Co-Chairman of the Delta Regional Authority from 2002 to 2011.

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is a museum in Jackson,Mississippi. Its mission is to document,exhibit the history of,and educate the public about the American Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. state of Mississippi between 1945 and 1970. The museum secured $20 million in funding from the Mississippi Legislature in April 2011 after Governor Haley Barbour testified in favor of its funding. Ground was broken in 2013,and the museum opened on December 9,2017. The museum is administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
The 1954 Ole Miss Rebels football team represented the University of Mississippi during the 1954 college football season. The Rebels were led by eighth-year head coach Johnny Vaught and played their home games at Hemingway Stadium in Oxford,Mississippi and Crump Stadium in Memphis,Tennessee. Ole Miss was champion of the Southeastern Conference,finishing the regular season with a record of 9–1,and ranked 6th in both major polls. They were invited to the 1955 Sugar Bowl,where they lost to Navy.
Wharlest Jackson was an American civil rights activist who was murdered by a car bomb,with evidence of involvement by a white supremacy organization;it has been an unsolved murder since the 1960s. Jackson served as treasurer of the Natchez,Mississippi branch of the NAACP until his assassination by a car bomb,which was placed on the frame of his truck under the driver-side seat. The bomb exploded at approximate 8 p.m. on February 27,1967. This supposedly occurred when he switched on his turn signal on his way home. The explosion caused serious damage to Wharlest's lower torso and he died at the scene. The scene of his death was six blocks away from the site where he was employed,at Armstrong Rubber and Tire Company.
The 2019 Mississippi gubernatorial election took place on November 5,2019,to choose the next Governor of Mississippi. Incumbent Governor Phil Bryant was ineligible to run for a third term due to term limits. The Democratic Party nominated incumbent Attorney General Jim Hood,the only Democrat holding statewide office in Mississippi;the Republican Party nominated incumbent Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves. In the general election,Reeves defeated Hood by a margin of 5.08%,the closest gubernatorial election in Mississippi since 1999,with Reeves significantly underperforming Trump who won the state by 17 points,3 years prior.
The 1939 Ole Miss Rebels football team represented the University of Mississippi in the 1939 college football season. The Rebels were led by second-year head coach Harry Mehre and played their home games at Hemingway Stadium in Oxford,Mississippi. After winning their first three games of the season,Ole Miss made their first ever appearance in the AP Poll. Their victory over rival Vanderbilt was also their first ever;they had lost the first 19 match-ups in the series over a 45-year span. They would finish with a record of 7–2,to finish fifth in the Southeastern Conference.

Steven A. Patterson is an American lawyer and politician who served as State Auditor of Mississippi from 1992 to 1996. A Democrat,he worked on several political campaigns in the 1970s and served as treasurer for Bill Allain's 1983 gubernatorial campaign. With Allain's backing,Patterson assumed the chairmanship of the Mississippi Democratic Party,which he held until 1987.
