Derek Shawn O'Brien is an American punk rock drummer and producer.
O'Brien started playing at Fullerton High School playing with the school Jazz Band, Marching Band and Orchestras and played in cover bands by night with guitarists Stan De Witt and Frank Agnew.
He joined local punk rock band Social Distortion (1981–84). [1] His recordings with the band include the first EP "1945", Single ("Playpen"), BYO Compilation song "(Mass Hysteria)", and first full-length album Mommy's Little Monster . He featured in the documentary Another State Of Mind.[ citation needed ]
O'Brien was involved in D.I. (which featured many former members of Social Distortion and the Adolescents). He played on their 1983 EP D.I. , which was later re-released as Team Goon on Triple X Records. Derek performed as the drummer for D.I. in the film Suburbia , and is part of D.I.'s 1983 self-promotional video Suburbia Sessions.[ citation needed ]
In 1984 O'Brien joined the final incarnation of the Long Beach-based art-rock band Outer Circle. Subsequent to Outer Circle's dissolution, O'Brien and fellow Outer Circle alumni Cole Coonce and Steve "Spit" Spingola formed the Fontanelles with ex-Saccharine Trust bassist Mark Hodson.
Bassist Brent Liles and O'Brien reunited from 1989 until 1992 with Agent Orange Touring North America and recording Real Live Sound - Agent Orange Live at the Roxy.
In 1992 Brian Grillo (ex-singer of Lockup) enlisted O'Brien to play with Extra Fancy, including guitarist Michael Hately and bassist David Foster. In 1995, Extra Fancy produced Sinnerman and an independent EP No Mercy which has songs featured in movie soundtracks. Extra Fancy continued until 1997.
1996 - 2015, O'Brien and other founding members Greg Hetson (Bad Religion, Circle Jerks) and Eric Melvin (NOFX) formed Punk Rock Karaoke. Their first show featured Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh (Devo) and others. O'Brien toured and played local shows as their full time drummer until 2015. Many members and "special guests" performed with the group over the years including: Mike Watt (Iggy Pop), Mike Ness, Jonny 2 Bags (Social Distortion), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio, Blink 182), Noodles (The Offspring), Randy Bradbury (Pennywise), Fat Mike (NOFX, several Ramones, members of Descendants, and Dave King (Flogging Molly)!
1998, 1999 saw O'Brien working with a female fronted synth rock / pop band called Ripe featuring Pete Thorn on guitar, also on guitar was Andrew Browning (who Derek later played drums for and produced 3 albums for Browning and the Nine Pound Hammers). Another female fronted band during this time was Drag Beat featuring Rick Ballard and PJ Wolfe (founders of Acetate Records).
O'Brien studied at UCLA, earning a degree in Audio Engineering and in 2001 founded D.O'B. Sound Recording Studios in Glendale, California. In 2009 he relocated the studio to Santa Fe Springs, California and now offers recording, mixing, mastering, rehearsals, a course in audio engineering and private drum lessons. [2] O'Brien still performs on short international tours, local gigs, and recordings.
NOFX is an American punk rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. Bassist/lead vocalist Fat Mike, rhythm guitarist Eric Melvin and drummer Erik Sandin are original founding and longest-serving members of the band, who have appeared on every release of the band, although Sandin departed briefly in 1985, only to rejoin the following year. El Hefe joined the band in 1991 to play lead guitar and trumpet, rounding out the current line-up.

Part of the hardcore punk movement in southern California in the early 1980s, they were one of the main punk acts to emerge from Orange County, along with their peers in Agent Orange and Social Distortion. Founding bassist Steve Soto was the sole constant member of the band since its inception until his 2018 death, with singer Tony Reflex being in the group for all but one album.

Mommy's Little Monster is the debut studio album by American punk rock band Social Distortion, released in 1983. The album is notably different in its tone and quality from the band's subsequent releases, featuring styles of traditional punk rock, both traditional hardcore and melodic hardcore, and pop-punk. This is Social Distortion's only studio album to feature bassist Brent Liles and drummer Derek O'Brien, both of whom were out of the band by early 1984 and would be replaced by John Maurer and Chris Reece respectively. The album received underground acclaim from punk rock fanzines, and it has been acknowledged as influential and inspirational to the then-burgeoning pop-punk and skate punk scenes.

Jack Grisham is an American rock singer from Southern California. He is the vocalist for the punk rock band T.S.O.L., which emerged from the late 1970s Los Angeles hardcore punk rock scene, along with Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Bad Religion. Grisham has also fronted the bands Vicious Circle, the Joykiller, Tender Fury and Cathedral of Tears. He records with T.S.O.L., the Joykiller and the Manic Low.

Casey A. Royer, is an American musician and an early pioneer of the hardcore punk rock genre in Orange County. He named and formed the band Social Distortion as a teenager. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Royer is best known as the lead vocalist for Southern Californian punk rock band D.I. and as a drummer for the Adolescents.
Steve Soto was an American musician. Soto was a multi-talented instrumentalist, a founding member of California punk rock band Agent Orange in 1979, and a founding member of Adolescents in 1980 performing on bass guitar in both bands. Soto was also a member of Legal Weapon, Joyride, Manic Hispanic, Punk Rock Karaoke, and the punk supergroup 22 Jacks. Soto also fronted his own band, Steve Soto and the Twisted Hearts, starting in 2008.
Since the mid-1970s, California has had thriving regional punk rock movements. It primarily consists of bands from the Los Angeles, Orange County, Ventura County, San Diego, San Fernando Valley, San Francisco, Fresno, Bakersfield, Alameda County, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Oakland and Berkeley areas.
SIN 34 was an American hardcore punk rock band formed in 1981 in Santa Monica, California. The band featured a female front-person, Julie Lanfeld-Keskin. The band's rhythm section would go on to form Painted Willie in 1984, and sign with SST Records in 1985, and embark on a six-month national US tour with Black Flag in 1986. Reforming out of the blue in 2008, SIN 34 would once again play shows primarily in their native southern California through 2012. Longtime member and primary songwriter Phil Newman died after an apparent accident on a sail boat, February 22, 2015; the band has no plans to continue. Singer Lanfeld-Keskin died April 4, 2018.
Punk Rock Karaoke is a band originally formed in 1996 in a Los Feliz bar and restaurant in Los Angeles called Vida to serve as entertainment for a New Year's Eve party. Created as an all star side project by Greg Hetson , original members then were Eric Melvin (NOFX), Jennifer Finch (L7), Derek O'Brien, and Bob Mothersbaugh (Devo). Later members to join the group include Steve Soto, Stan Lee, Eddie Tatar, and following the departure of Derek O'Brien Darrin Pfeiffer (Goldfinger) on drums.

Its original line-up consisted of three former members of art-rock band Outer Circle: Guitarist Cole Coonce, vocalist Steve "Spit" Spingola, and drummer Derek O'Brien. The original quartet was completed by ex-Saccharine Trust bass player Mark Hodson.
