Sebonta Desbo Mohono (born 28 October 1970) is a South African politician who is currently serving as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development since December 2018. Since 2009,she has served continuously in the North West Provincial Legislature and the Executive Council of the North West,including as MEC for Tourism from 2014 to 2018.
A teacher by training,she rose to political prominence through the South African Democratic Teachers Union and Congress of South African Trade Unions. She is a member of the African National Congress and in 2022 was elected to a four-year term on the party's Provincial Executive Committee.
Mohono was born on 28 October 1970 in the village of Chaneng near Rustenberg,now part of South Africa's North West province. [1] She was initially schooled in that region but matriculated at Seabe High School in present-day Mpumalanga. In 1993,after completing a tertiary diploma in teaching,she began work as a teacher. [1] While a teacher,she rose through the regional and provincial ranks of the South African Democratic Teachers Union,an affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU),and she was a member of COSATU's provincial executive in the North West from 2004 to 2009. [1]
Mohono left teaching in 2009 when she was elected as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature,representing the African National Congress (ANC). [1] On 8 May 2009,she was appointed to the North West Executive Council by Maureen Modiselle,the newly elected Premier of the North West;she became the province's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Housing. [2] [3] In November 2010,Modiselle was succeeded by Thandi Modise,who reconfigured and expanded Mohono's portfolio as the Department of Human Settlements,Safety and Liaison. [4] [5] She remained in that position until 3 May 2012,when Modise reshuffled her cabinet and made Mohono MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development. [6]
In the 2014 general election,Mohono was re-elected to her legislative seat,ranked 13th on the ANC's party list in the North West. [7] Supra Mahumapelo,who was elected Premier in the same election,appointed Mohono his MEC for Tourism,an office which she held for the duration of Mahumapelo's tenure in office. [8] On 6 December 2018,Mahumapelo's successor,Job Mokgoro,announced a reshuffle in which Mohono was returned to her former portfolio,renamed for a brief period as Rural,Environmental and Agricultural Development. In the 2019 general election,she was re-elected to a third legislative term,now ranked ninth on the ANC's party list. [7] She remained in the same portfolio in the Executive Council,including after the election of Bushy Maape as Premier in 2022. [11]
In 2011 [1] and 2022, [12] Mohono was elected to four-year terms on the North West ANC's Provincial Executive Committee. In 2018,the national leadership of the ANC appointed her to an interim task team formed to lead the provincial party after ANC Provincial Chairperson Supra Mahumapelo was removed from his position. [13] She is also a member of the ANC Women's League and the South African Communist Party. [1]
Kaobitsa Abel Bushy Maape is a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist who has been the 7th Premier of the North West and a member of the North West Provincial Legislature since September 2021. Maape is a member of the African National Congress and a former Robben Island prisoner.
Motlalepula Ziphora Rosho is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she was elected deputy speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in 2010. In 2012 she was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism in the North West Provincial Government. Rosho was discharged from the executive council in 2014 and then served in the provincial legislature as a committee chairperson until December 2018,when she returned to the executive as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement. Rosho was appointed as MEC for Finance after the 2019 elections.
Patrick Dumile Nono Maloyi is a South African politician who has been Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlement,Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the North West province since November 2022. In August 2022,he was elected Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West,a position he formerly held from 2008 to 2009. His former positions include Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature (2009–2012) and MEC for Human Settlement and Public Safety (2012–2014),and he has also served in the National Assembly.
Jonas Sello Lehari is a South African politician who is currently serving as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety and Transport Management in the North West. He formerly served as MEC for Education and Sports Development from May 2016 to May 2019,and before that as Mayor of Moretele Local Municipality. In August 2022,he was additionally elected Provincial Treasurer of the North West branch of his political party,the African National Congress (ANC).
The Executive Council of the North West is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of the North West. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the North West Provincial Legislature by the Premier of the North West,an office held since September 2021 by Bushy Maape of the African National Congress (ANC).
Thamsanqa China Dodovu is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces since May 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Klerksdorp's Matlosana Local Municipality and served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the North West provincial government from May 2012 until June 2013. Dodovu is a member of the African National Congress and served as the party's Deputy Provincial Chairperson in the North West from 2011 to 2015.
Mmaphefo Lucy "Wendy" Matsemela is a South African politician who was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the North West from May 2019 to December 2022. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2022. While in the provincial legislature,she served almost continuously in the North West Executive Council,excepting two gaps from 2010 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2018. She resigned from the provincial legislature in December 2022 after Premier Bushy Maape fired her as an MEC.
Gaoage Oageng Saliva Molapisi,sometimes also known as Oagile Saliva Molapisi,is a South African politician who is currently serving as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works and Roads since December 2018. He previously served as MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management from 2014 to 2016,before spending two years as an ordinary Member of the North West Provincial Legislature from 2016 to 2018. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Ontlametse Regina Mochware is a South African politician who served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Culture,Arts and Traditional Affairs from May 2016 to May 2019. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature from January 2016 until May 2019.
Onewang Rebecca Kasienyane was a South African politician who served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health and Social Development from May 2009 to November 2010. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature from May 2009 until her death in April 2013. Before that,she was a Member of the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009. She was also a prominent leader of the ANC Women's League in the North West.

She formerly served in the North West Executive Council between November 2010 and January 2016,when she resigned from the North West Provincial Legislature to become Mayor of Ratlou Local Municipality.
Mosetsanagape Margaret Mokomele-Mothibi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2014,when she failed to gain re-election. She served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development,Women,Children and People with Disabilities from November 2010 to June 2013 under Premier Thandi Modise. She was fired from the Executive Council after she admitted that she had used public funds to attend the ANC's 52nd National Conference in December 2012.
Louisa Lorato Mabe is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2014. She served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2009 to 2012 and as MEC for Education from 2012 to 2013. Premier Thandi Modise fired her from the Executive Council in June 2013 after she was accused of involvement in procurement irregularities.
Oabetswe Johannes Tselapedi was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature. He served as the second Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2004 and then as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education from 2004 until November 2010,when he was fired by newly elected Premier Thandi Modise. He also served as Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the ANC in the North West from 1996 to 1998. He was serving as a local councillor in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality at the time of his death in 2021.
