The DiploFoundation (or Diplo, in short) is a non-profit organisation based in Malta, with offices in Geneva and Belgrade.
The founding of Diplo emerged from a project to introduce information and communications technology (ICT) tools to the practice of diplomacy, [1] initiated in 1992 at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies in Malta.
In November 2002, Diplo was established as an independent non-profit foundation by the Government of Malta and the Government of Switzerland. [2] In June 2006, the organisation was granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). [3] In September 2007, Diplo’s online courses received academic accreditation from the University of Malta.
Diplo's mission is to strengthen the meaningful participation of all stakeholders in diplomacy, international relations, and policy areas such as Internet governance and climate change. It aims to increase the power of small and developing states to influence their own futures and development; increase international accountability and inclusivity; increase the legitimacy of international policy making; and improve global governance and international policy development.
A major focus of the organization is capacity development on subjects pertaining to diplomacy and international relations, including public diplomacy, e-diplomacy, [4] and internet governance. The foundation's Master's degree program in contemporary diplomacy, with a separate track on Internet governance, is accredited through the University of Malta. [5]
In the area of Internet governance, Diplo runs the Geneva Internet Platform (GIP), an initiative of the Swiss authorities launched in April 2014, [6] [7] and the GIP Digital Watch initiative, including the Digital Watch observatory.

After independence in 1964, Malta followed a policy of close co-operation with NATO countries. Since 1971, the country sought relations with the rest of the world, including communist countries in Eastern Europe and the non-aligned countries.
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a two-phase United Nations-sponsored summit on information, communication and, in broad terms, the information society that took place in 2003 in Geneva and in 2005 in Tunis. WSIS Forums have taken place periodically since then. One of the Summit's chief aims is to bridge the global digital divide separating rich countries from poor countries by increasing internet accessibility in the developing world. The conferences established 17 May as World Information Society Day.
The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs is an international organization that brings together scholars and public figures to work toward reducing the danger of armed conflict and to seek solutions to global security threats. It was founded in 1957 by Joseph Rotblat and Bertrand Russell in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Canada, following the release of the Russell–Einstein Manifesto in 1955.

The School of Diplomacy and International Relations (SODIR), is a post-secondary, degree-granting institution concentrating on international affairs within Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. Founded in collaboration with the United Nations Association of the United States of America, it was the first school of international relations to be founded after the Cold War. The school offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. The School of Diplomacy and International Relations is an affiliate member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs.
The Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI), established in 1999, is one of the leading think tanks in Pakistan. It is affiliated with the National Security Division (NSD), Government of Pakistan. IPRI focuses on datafication, digitalization and disruption, and as a result of recent reforms, IPRI is ranked 74th in the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Programme.
