Distant is an upcoming American science fiction film directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck and written by Spenser Cohen. It stars Anthony Ramos, Naomi Scott, and Zachary Quinto.
Distant is scheduled to be released in the United States by Universal Pictures.
The spaceship of asteroid miner Andy gets struck, crash landing him on an alien planet where he contends with his AI survival suit. Losing oxygen, he connects with fellow crew member Naomi via radio, who is trapped inside her escape pod, leading him to go search and rescue her.
On February 21, 2019, Amblin Partners announced it had bought Distant, a spec script by Spenser Cohen. [1] In August 2019, it was announced that Josh Gordon and Will Speck would direct the film, with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger, and Anna Halberg attached as producers. [2] In December 2019, Anthony Ramos joined the cast. [3] Rachel Brosnahan was cast in February 2020, but later dropped out due to scheduling conflicts; she was replaced by Naomi Scott in August 2020. Filming began in Budapest, Hungary, on September 21, 2020. [7] As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cast and crew followed a number of safety protocols, including "extensive sanitization" procedures, wearing face masks, and social distancing. [8] [9] In October 2020, it was reported Kristofer Hivju would also star. [10] Filming concluded on November 13, 2020. [11] By May 2021, the film was still in post-production. [12] [13] Steven Price composed the musical score. [14] In July 2021, Zachary Quinto was confirmed as part of the cast. [15] Gregory Plotkin served as the editor on the film. [16]
Distant was originally scheduled for March 11, 2022, September 16, 2022, and later January 27, 2023, before being quietly pulled from Universal Pictures' release schedule. [15] [17] According to Amblin's website, it was scheduled for January 19, 2024. [18] However, on November 9, 2023, the film was once again removed from the schedule. No new release date has been officially announced since then. [19]
Gareth James Edwards is an Welsh filmmaker. He gained recognition for Monsters (2010), an independent film in which he served as writer, director, cinematographer, and visual effects artist. He subsequently directed Godzilla (2014), a reboot of Toho's Godzilla franchise and the first film in Legendary's MonsterVerse, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), the first installment of the Star Wars anthology series and an immediate prequel to Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977). He returned to making original films with the science fiction thriller The Creator (2023).
Naomi Scott is an English actress and singer. Born in Hounslow, London, Scott began her career with a starring role on the Disney Channel series Life Bites (2008–2009) and gained wider recognition for starring in the television musical film Lemonade Mouth (2011), for which she performed on the chart-topping eponymous soundtrack. Following this breakthrough, she starred in the science fiction series Terra Nova (2011) and the superhero film Power Rangers (2017).
