The Domenici Institute is a public policy institute at New Mexico State University named after retired Sen. Pete Domenici, New Mexico's longest-serving senator. Each year, the institute holds its Domenici Public Policy Conference, which brings together some of the best minds in the country to focus on significant national issues. The Domenici Public Policy Conference

2010 Domenici Conference

The 2010 Domenici Public Policy Conference, held Sept. 1-2, 2010, focused on financial reform, national security and analysis of the 2010 election. [4]

Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and 3rd Judicial District Attorney Susana Martinez, both candidates for New Mexico governor, separately presented the major policy initiatives they would advance in office during the second morning of the conference. Following their presentations, Denish and Martinez took questions from university student panelists. [5]

As part of the conference, ABC News contributor Sam Donaldson moderated a discussion between Fox News contributor Karl Rove and political analyst Joe Lockhart, taking an in-depth look at the 2010 midterm election. [6] [7] Donaldson is a longtime newsman who began working for ABC News in the 1960s and later went on to host a number of news programs for the network. Rove served as deputy chief of staff and senior adviser to former President George W. Bush. He is also a columnist for The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek . Lockhart served as press secretary for former President Bill Clinton from 1998-2000. He is now a political analyst and commentator.

Kay Bailey Hutchison addressed border security issues. [8] She is the first – and, to date, the only – woman elected to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. She is the senior Republican on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Additionally, she serves on the Appropriations Committee, the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and the Committee on Rules and Administration.

Sam Nunn spoke about nuclear nonproliferation. He is co-chairman and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a charitable organization working to reduce the global threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. He served as a U.S. senator from Georgia for 24 years from 1972 to 1996. During his tenure in the Senate, he served as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

Thomas Hoenig covered financial reform. He is the chief executive of the Tenth District Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, Mo. He earned a bachelor's in economics and mathematics from Benedictine College and a master's and Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State University.

2009 Domenici Conference

The 2009 Domenici Public Policy Conference, held Sept. 16-17, 2009 at NMSU's Corbett Center, was headlined by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. [9] That year's topics included the U.S. economy and national debt, homeland security, the U.S./Mexico border and nuclear energy.

David Walker, former director of the U.S. Government Accountability Office spoke about the U.S. economy and the national debt. Alex Flint, senior vice president at the Nuclear Energy Institute, spoke about nuclear energy.

As in the previous year's conference, students from universities around the New Mexico, including NMSU, New Mexico Tech, the University of New Mexico, Eastern New Mexico University, Western New Mexico University, Northern New Mexico College and New Mexico Highlands University had a chance to interact with the conference speakers and ask about their views at the conclusion of each session.

2008 Domenici Conference

U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate Chris Dodd joined a prominent list of speakers for the inaugural Domenici Public Policy Conference, Aug. 20-22, at New Mexico State University.

Former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman and former U.S. Representative Manuel Lujan, Jr. all spoke during the event, along with a host of other local and national leaders. The conference closed with a free picnic and free concert performed by country music star Randy Travis.

Domenici Conference sessions focused on topics important to the senator during his time in office, including behavioral health, national security, the federal budget and nuclear nonproliferation.

Other conference speakers included Paul Robinson, former ambassador and president emeritus of Sandia National Laboratories; Michael J. Fitzpatrick, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness; William Hoagland, a former member of Domenici's staff; and Siegfried Hecker, co-director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation.

Diane Daniels Denish is an American politician, who was the 28th lieutenant governor of New Mexico. She was elected in 2002, running on the same ticket as Governor Bill Richardson, and was re-elected in 2006. Denish is the first woman to hold that post.

Garrey Edward Carruthers is an American politician and academic who served as the 27th governor of New Mexico and the Chancellor of New Mexico State University. He previously served as special assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1974 to 1975, director of the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute at NMSU, state chair of the Republican Party of New Mexico from 1977 to 1979, and United States Deputy Secretary of the Interior for Land and Resources from 1981 to 1984.

Environmental activism of Al Gore

Al Gore is a United States politician and environmentalist. He is the former Vice President of the United States (1993–2001), the 2000 Democratic Party presidential nominee, and the co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The 2010 New Mexico gubernatorial election took place on November 2, 2010. Democratic Governor Bill Richardson was term limited and could not seek reelection to a third consecutive term.

Kathleen Merrigan

Kathleen Ann Merrigan is an American politician who served as the United States Deputy Secretary of Agriculture from April 8, 2009 until her resignation from this position on March 14, 2013. She was the first woman to chair the Ministerial Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2011. She was the former Executive Director of the Sustainability Collaborative at the George Washington University. At GW she also led the GW Food Institute and was a Professor of Public Policy. The Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings, renamed from Oak Hill Academy in May 2009, is an alternative school operated by the non-profit See Forever Foundation which manages Maya Angelou Schools. Named after American poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, the school is located east of Laurel, Maryland in Anne Arundel County. It is at the New Beginnings Youth Development Center, the District of Columbia's secure facility for youth who are adjudicated as delinquent and committed to its Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS).

The 2010 Nuclear Security Summit was a summit held in Washington, D.C., on April 12 and 13, 2010. The Summit focused on how to better safeguard weapons-grade plutonium and uranium to prevent nuclear terrorism.

2012 United States Senate election in New Mexico

The 2012 United States Senate election in New Mexico took place on November 6, 2012, concurrently with the 2012 U.S. presidential election as well as other elections to the United States Senate and House of Representatives as well as various state and local elections. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman decided to retire instead of running for reelection to a sixth term. Democratic U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich won the open seat.

José Luis Romero (journalist) Mexican crime journalist and murder victim

José Luis Romero, was a Mexican radio journalist for Línea Directa Radio and Radio Sistema del Noroeste in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, and he was known for his reporting about drug trafficking. Romero was a journalist for roughly 20 years and had been with Línea Directa for ten years. He had been missing for two weeks until his body was found tortured and brutally murdered. Romero's murder, along with other Mexican journalists who have been killed during their job, was interpreted by CNN as intimidation toward journalists.

Adam Laxalt 33rd Attorney General of Nevada

Adam Paul Laxalt is an American attorney and Republican Party politician who served as the 33rd Nevada attorney general from 2015 to 2019. He unsuccessfully ran for governor of Nevada, losing to Democrat Steve Sisolak in the 2018 gubernatorial election.

Partnership for a Secure America

State Road 136 (NM 136) is a 9.157-mile-long (14.737 km), paved, four-lane, divided state highway in Doña Ana County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It travels largely south-to-north. NM 136 is an important connecting road between the border and Interstate 10 (I-10).
