Douglas Martin Lampkin MBE (born 23 March 1976) is an English former professional motorcycle trials and endurocross rider. He competed in the FIM Trial World Championships from 1994 to 2006. Lampkin is notable for being a seven-time motorcycle trials world outdoor champion. He is the second most successful trials rider in history, after Toni Bou with 30 (15 outdoor and 15 indoor). In 2012, Lampkin was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements. [1]

Career

Lampkin was born in Silsden, West Yorkshire into a family steeped in motorcycle sport. His father, Martin Lampkin, was the first FIM Trial World Championship winner in 1975, and his Uncle, Arthur Lampkin, was also a regular winner on the British circuit in the 1960s. [2]

He is the first person to have won five consecutive World Indoor (1997–2001) and seven consecutive World Outdoor Championships (1997–2003). He has also won four World Team Championships (Trial des Nations) in years 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2003, six British Adult Championships, two Spanish Adult Championships and the Scottish Six Days Trial on fourteen occasions. Lampkin now lives on the Isle of Man. In the 2002 New Year Honours, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Motorcycle Trials Riding. [6] [7]

At the age of 20 years and 5 months, Bou was the second youngest rider ever to win the World Indoor Title, and the youngest to do it on a 4-stroke motorbike.

The Scottish Six Days Trial is an internationally recognised Motorcycle trials competition, which has been running since 1909 making it the oldest motorcycle trials event in the world. Motorcycle riders from all over the world compete in this extreme sport, covering as much as 100 miles a day on road and off-road routes around Lochaber on each of the six days. The event is a trial of the skill, consistency and endurance of the riders, as well as a test of the specialised motorcycles used.

Gerd Riss is a former speedway rider from Germany, who competed in motorcycle speedway and Longtrack racing. He is an eight-times World longtrack champion. He also earned 22 international caps for the West German national speedway team and 12 international caps for the German national speedway team.

Jordi Tarrés is a Spanish former international motorcycle trials rider. He competed in the FIM Trial World Championships from 1985 to 1997. Tarrés is notable for being a seven-time motorcycle trials world champion. He is the third most successful trials rider in history, after Dougie Lampkin with 12 titles and Toni Bou with 32. In 2010, Tarrés was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements.

He competed in a variety of off-road motorcycle events, but specialized in observed trials competitions, winning the inaugural FIM Trial World Championship held in 1975. In a genre of motorcycling competition that features balletic grace and acrobatic finesse, Lampkin was an iconoclast, using sheer momentum and physical strength to assault trials course sections. He died in 2016 of cancer.

Bernard Schreiber, is an American former international motorcycle trials rider. He became the only American to win the FIM Trial World Championship in 1979. In 2000 he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and, in 2020 he was named an FIM Legend.

The FIM Trials European Championship is organised by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme and has been held since 1992. The championship gives up and coming riders a chance to compete at international level against top class riders, many who have progressed to become champions in the FIM Trial World Championship such as current champion Toni Bou and past champions Dougie Lampkin and Adam Raga
