A drying room is a room intended for drying objects. It can act as a replacement or complement for drying cabinets, tumble-dryers, and outdoor drying. Compared to outdoor drying, a drying room means one usually does not have to consider the weather forecast in case of rain.

In industrial operations, drying rooms are used for drying various materials for several purposes such as the manufacture of products made of wood and paper, as well as the production of food, pharmaceuticals, and ceramic industries.

In households, drying rooms are typically used for newly washed clothes, wet training clothes, and any outerwear and are often connected to a laundry room. They can also be found in connection with changing rooms, especially for commuters in commercial buildings. A simple drying room can have clotheslines to hang clothes on, for example, at 30–40 cm intervals.

A drying room can be a living area if, for example, it is combined with a bathroom, or a storage or utility room if it is primarily a technical room or a wardrobe.

History

On farms and manors in older times, dried fruit, flax, and other agricultural products were dried over an open fire, which increased the risk of fire, and separate buildings for such purposes are said to have been constructed on farms or manors at a sufficient distance from other buildings. [1] Brewhouses may be an example of this.

Many cabins, [2] kindergartens and workplaces where there are a lot of wet clothes commonly have drying rooms. [3] Some housing associations have drying rooms in common areas, [4] but many new small apartments do not have drying rooms due to lack of available area. [5]

Modes of operation

The drying mechanisms used in drying rooms can be classified according to: [6]

Ventilation

In climates with dry air, natural ventilation can be used to replace moist indoor air with dry outdoor air. [10] [11]

Heat

Some drying rooms have hot air systems, which are energy-intensive and often entail larger operating costs. [12] The heated air is circulated in the room before it is vented out through ducts. It can be assumed that the energy consumption of drying clothes with heating in this way is several times more expensive than washing clothes. [13]

Dehumidification

Drying rooms can be equipped with a dehumidifier that circulates and dehumidifies the air in the room and provides some heating in the form of waste heat. This can be much more energy efficient than solutions based on heating and ventilation. [13] For the dehumidifier to work effectively it can be beneficial to have a lot of air movement within the room.

Various drying rooms exist for specific items, such as clothes, art, wood, or food. Large drying rooms are sometimes used in the industry, for example, in producing timber products. In an industrial context, it can also be mentioned that stockfish are dried outdoors.

Typical air conditioning systems combine dehumidification with cooling, by operating cooling coils below the dewpoint and draining away the water that condenses.

A clothes dryer, also known as tumble dryer or simply dryer, is a powered household appliance that is used to remove moisture from a load of clothing, bedding and other textiles, usually after they are washed in a washing machine.

Ventilation is the intentional introduction of outdoor air into a space. A clothes line, also spelt clothesline and also known as a washing line, is a device for hanging clothes on for the purpose of drying them. It is any type of rope, cord, or twine that has been stretched between two points, outside or indoors, above the level of the ground. Clothing that has recently been washed is hung along the line to dry, using clothes pegs or clothespins. Washing lines are attached either from a post or a wall, and are frequently located in back gardens, or on balconies. Longer washing lines often have props holding up sections in the middle due to the weight of the usually wet clothing.

The stack effect or chimney effect is the movement of air into and out of buildings through unsealed openings, chimneys, flue-gas stacks, or other containers, resulting from air buoyancy. Buoyancy occurs due to a difference in indoor-to-outdoor air density resulting from temperature and moisture differences. The result is either a positive or negative buoyancy force. The greater the thermal difference and the height of the structure, the greater the buoyancy force, and thus the stack effect. The stack effect helps drive natural ventilation, air infiltration, and fires.

A ground-coupled heat exchanger is an underground heat exchanger that can capture heat from and/or dissipate heat to the ground. A drying cabinet is today usually an electrical machine designed to expedite the drying of items - usually clothing - that are unsuitable for a mechanical clothes dryer. Radiant heating and cooling is a category of HVAC technologies that exchange heat by both convection and radiation with the environments they are designed to heat or cool. There are many subcategories of radiant heating and cooling, including: "radiant ceiling panels", "embedded surface systems", "thermally active building systems", and infrared heaters. According to some definitions, a technology is only included in this category if radiation comprises more than 50% of its heat exchange with the environment; therefore technologies such as radiators and chilled beams are usually not considered radiant heating or cooling. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Moisture removal efficiency</span>

Moisture Removal Efficiency (MRE) is a measure of the energy efficiency of any dehumidification process. Moisture removal efficiency is the water vapor removed from air at a defined inlet air temperature and humidity, divided by the total energy consumed by the dehumidification equipment during the same time period, including all fan and pump energy needed to move air and fluids through the system.

A shoe dryer or boot dryer is a machine used for drying shoes, and usually functions by blowing air on the inside of the shoes. The airflow causes the shoes to dry faster. The air can be heated for even faster drying, and these are the most common types. Shoes dryers can be especially useful for people who often have wet shoes, such as families with small children or people who often hike outdoor in the nature, or for ski boots which often are moist after use. Many shoes dryers have a timer which shuts off the dryer after some time. There are also shoe dryers which instead use a heated grate which the shoes are placed on top of, and which do not blow air.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Airing</span>

Airing is the practice of hanging or laying out articles and exposing them to air, and sometimes heat and light. This practice is commonly used to dry many types of fabric. One of the most common methods of drying using airing is the clothesline. It consists of a thin wire from which clothing pieces and bedsheets are hung, using pegs or simply laying the article over the line.
