Edward D. Garza (born 1969),is an American politician and a professional urban planner. From 2001 to 2005,he served as mayor of San Antonio,Texas. Elected at the age of 32,he is the youngest person to become mayor of San Antonio and only the second person of Hispanic descent to hold the office since the election of Henry Cisneros in 1981.
A native of San Antonio,Garza graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1986. He attended the University of Texas at Austin studying Business Administration for two years before transferring to Texas A&M University in College Station,where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture in 1992 and a Master of Science in Land Development in 1994. In 2010,Garza was the president and CEO of the urban development and investment firm Zane Garway. He was previously a principal in the firm AECOM. Garza has also held adjunct professor positions at the University of Texas at San Antonio and St. Mary's University.
Garza's political career includes two terms on the San Antonio City Council,two terms as Mayor of San Antonio,and as of 2009,a trustee of the San Antonio Independent School District. [2]
Though a Democrat,all of Garza's offices have thus far been nonpartisan. In 2010,Garza endorsed the reelection of Republican Governor Rick Perry in the November 2 general election against the Democratic nominee,Bill White,former mayor of Houston and former state party chairman. [3]

A Democrat,Cisneros served as the 10th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the administration of President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1997. As HUD Secretary,Cisneros was credited with initiating the revitalization of many public housing developments and with formulating policies that contributed to achieving the nation's highest ever rate of home ownership. In his role as the President's chief representative to the cities,Cisneros personally worked in more than two hundred cities spread over all fifty states. Cisneros's decision to leave the HUD position and not serve a second term was overshadowed by controversy involving payments to his former mistress.

William E. Thornton is an American politician who served as the mayor of San Antonio,Texas from 1995 to 1997. He succeeded Nelson Wolff and was himself followed by Howard Peak,after Thornton finished third in his bid for reelection. Thornton also served as a member of the San Antonio City Council for district 8. During the 1997 mayoral election,public relations consultant T. J. Connolly defected from Thornton to Peak's campaign and was subsequently reported to the police for stalking Thornton and his wife. The incident was investigated by the police found no basis for the charge. Connolly describes the incident as "a cold,calculated,well-planned political move". Thornton was a noted proponent for proposals to restore and expand San Antonio's historic center in the area around the Alamo,as well as a supporter of tax abatements to promote tourism through the construction of new hotels. His term as mayor was marked by tension between the mayor and members of the city council.

He is the only Anglo Democrat from a heavily rural district. King was initially elected to Texas House of Representatives as a representative of the 43rd district on November 8,1994,when he unseated the one-term Democrat-turned-Republican incumbent Pedro G. Nieto. King received 15,072 votes to Nieto's 9,321. With his 2023 victory,King has been elected to a total of fifteen two-year terms.
