Henry Gabriel Cisneros is an American politician and businessman. He served as the mayor of San Antonio,Texas,from 1981 to 1989,the second Latino mayor of a major American city and the city's first since 1842. A Democrat,Cisneros served as the 10th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the administration of President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1997. As HUD Secretary,Cisneros was credited with initiating the revitalization of many public housing developments and with formulating policies that contributed to achieving the nation's highest ever rate of home ownership. In his role as the President's chief representative to the cities,Cisneros personally worked in more than two hundred cities spread over all fifty states. Cisneros's decision to leave the HUD position and not serve a second term was overshadowed by controversy involving payments to his former mistress.

William E. Thornton is an American politician who served as the mayor of San Antonio,Texas from 1995 to 1997. He succeeded Nelson Wolff and was himself followed by Howard Peak,after Thornton finished third in his bid for reelection. Thornton also served as a member of the San Antonio City Council for district 8. During the 1997 mayoral election,public relations consultant T. J. Connolly defected from Thornton to Peak's campaign and was subsequently reported to the police for stalking Thornton and his wife. The incident was investigated by the police found no basis for the charge. Connolly describes the incident as "a cold,calculated,well-planned political move". Thornton was a noted proponent for proposals to restore and expand San Antonio's historic center in the area around the Alamo,as well as a supporter of tax abatements to promote tourism through the construction of new hotels. His term as mayor was marked by tension between the mayor and members of the city council.

He is the only Anglo Democrat from a heavily rural district. By contrast,there were eighty-five Anglo Democrats in the House in 1985,eighty-three in 1987,with fifty-six of those from primarily rural areas. King was initially elected to Texas House of Representatives as a representative of the 43rd district on November 8,1994,when he unseated the one-term Democrat-turned-Republican incumbent Pedro G. Nieto. King received 15,072 votes to Nieto's 9,321. With his 2023 victory,King has been elected to a total of fifteen two-year terms.
