The Egyptian Open is the national open golf tournament of Egypt. It was first played in 1921, and is the oldest professional competition in the Middle East. [1] During the early 1950s, it was contested by many of the world's leading golfers, with winners including Bobby Locke and Bernard Hunt. [2] [3]

In 2009, the tournament once again attracted an international field including eight time European Tour Order of Merit winner and captain of the 2010 European Ryder Cup team Colin Montgomerie. [1] During the event, it was announced that a deal had been signed which would see the Egyptian Open become an event on the second tier Challenge Tour for a minimum of three years from 2010. [4]

The Challenge Tour last visited Egypt in 2004 for the Al Ahram-Jolie Ville Sharm El Sheikh Challenge.

Colin Stuart Montgomerie, OBE is a Scottish professional golfer. He has won a record eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, including a streak of seven consecutive from 1993 to 1999. He has won 31 European Tour events, the most of any British player, placing him fourth on the all-time list of golfers with most European Tour victories.

The European Tour, currently titled as the DP World Tour for sponsorship reasons, and legally the PGA European Tour or the European Tour Group, is the leading men's professional golf tour in Europe. The organisation also operates the European Senior Tour and the developmental Challenge Tour; the second tier of men’s professional golf in Europe. The tour's headquarters are at the Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. The European Tour was established by the British-based Professional Golfers' Association through the 1970s, and responsibility was transferred to an independent PGA European Tour organisation in 1984.

Alexander Walter Barr Lyle is a Scottish professional golfer. Lyle has won two major championships during his career. Along with Nick Faldo and Ian Woosnam, he became one of Britain's top golfers during the 1980s. He spent 167 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking from its introduction, in 1986, until 1989. Lyle was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in May 2012.
