The Department of Earth Sciences at Cambridge is the University of Cambridge's Earth Sciences department. First formed around 1731,the department incorporates the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences.
Don Lynn Anderson was an American geophysicist who made significant contributions to the understanding of the origin,evolution,structure,and composition of Earth and other planets. An expert in numerous scientific disciplines,Anderson's work combined seismology,solid state physics,geochemistry and petrology to explain how the Earth works. Anderson was best known for his contributions to the understanding of the Earth's deep interior,and more recently,for the plate theory hypothesis that hotspots are the product of plate tectonics rather than narrow plumes emanating from the deep Earth. Anderson was Professor (Emeritus) of Geophysics in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He received numerous awards from geophysical,geological and astronomical societies. In 1998 he was awarded the Crafoord Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences along with Adam Dziewonski. Later that year,Anderson received the National Medal of Science. He held honorary doctorates from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Paris (Sorbonne),and served on numerous university advisory committees,including those at Harvard,Princeton,Yale,University of Chicago,Stanford,University of Paris,Purdue University,and Rice University. Anderson's wide-ranging research resulted in hundreds of published papers in the fields of planetary science,seismology,mineral physics,petrology,geochemistry,tectonics and the philosophy of science.
Alfred Harker FRS was an English geologist who specialised in petrology and interpretive petrography. He was Lecturer in Petrology at the University of Cambridge for many years,and carried out field mapping for the Geological Survey of Scotland and geological studies of western Scotland and the Isle of Skye. He and other British geologists pioneered the use of thin sections and the petrographic microscope in interpretive petrology.
John Michael David Coey,known as Michael Coey,is a Belfast-born experimental physicist working in the fields of magnetism and spintronics. He got a BA in Physics at Jesus College,Cambridge (1966),and a PhD from University of Manitoba (1971) for a thesis on "Mössbauer Effect of 57Fe in Magnetic Oxides" with advisor Allan H. Morrish. Trinity College Dublin (TCD),where he has been in the physics department since 1978,awarded him ScD (1987) and the University of Grenoble awarded him Dip. d'Habilitation (1986) and an honorary doctorate (1994). He served as Erasmus Smith's Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy at TCD from 2007 to 2012.
W. Gary Ernst is an American geologist specializing in petrology and geochemistry. He currently is the Benjamin M. Page Professor Emeritus in Stanford University's Department of Geological Sciences.

He joined the Earth Institute in April 2018,after spending more than a decade at the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford,during which time he was dean of science and engineering. He is also a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University.
The Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland began in 1876. Its main purpose is to disseminate scientific knowledge of the Mineral Sciences (mineralogy) as it may be applied to the fields of crystallography,geochemistry,petrology,environmental science and economic geology. In support of this vision,the society publishes scientific journals,books and monographs. It also organizes and sponsors scientific meetings,and the society connects with other societies which have similar scientific interests. Some of these other societies are the International Mineralogical Association,the European Mineralogical Union,the Mineralogical Society of America,the Mineralogical Association of Canada,the Geological Society of London,IOM3,the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers and the Microbiology Society.

Donald Bruce Dingwell is a Canadian geoscientist who is the director of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Ordinarius for Mineralogy and Petrology of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He is also currently vice-president of the Academia Europaea. From September 2011 to December 2013 he was the third and last secretary general of the European Research Council (ERC) where he embarked on a global participation campaign for the ERC. He is also a past-President of the European Geosciences Union and the current past-president of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI),founded in 1919.
Liane G. Benning is a biogeochemist studying mineral-fluid-microbe interface processes. She is a Professor of Interface Geochemistry at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam,Germany. Her team studies various processes that shape the Earth Surface with a special focus on two aspects:the nucleation,growth and crystallisation of mineral phases from solution and the role,effects and interplay between microbes and minerals in extreme environments. She is also interested in the characterisation of these systems,developing in situ and time resolved high resolution imaging and spectroscopic techniques to follow microbe-mineral reactions as they occur.
Richard J. Harrison is a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and director of Studies for Earth and Mineral Sciences at St. Catharine's College,University of Cambridge. He works in the field of palaeomagnetism.
The Professorship of Mineralogy and Petrology is a statutory professorship at the University of Cambridge. It was created in 1931 following the simultaneous retirements of Alfred Harker,from the post of Reader in Petrology in the Department of Geology,Cambridge;and of Arthur Hutchinson,Professor of Mineralogy. A committee of the Council of the Senate of the University proposed that these two posts be discontinued,and the remit of the Professorship of Mineralogy be expanded to include the disciplines of petrology and crystallography. The Professorship was established in the newly created Department of Mineralogy and Petrology. The first incumbent was Prof Cecil Edgar Tilley,who was appointed in 1931. Tilley was succeeded in 1961 by William Alexander Deer. Since 1980,and following the appointment of Ron Oxburgh,the Professorship has been associated with the Department of Earth Sciences,Cambridge. The other statutory professorships in this department are the Woodwardian Professor of Geology,the Professor of Geophysics,established in 1966,and the recently endowed BP Foundation McKenzie Professorship of Earth Sciences,established in 2010.
