In the latest regional election, which took place on 20–21 September 2020, Francesco Acquaroli of the Brothers of Italy (FdI) was elected president, giving to the centre-right coalition its first victory in the region.

Marche is one of the twenty regions of Italy. In English, the region is sometimes referred to as The Marches. The region is located in the central area of the country, bordered by Emilia-Romagna and the republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the west, Umbria to the southwest, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Except for river valleys and the often very narrow coastal strip, the land is hilly.
Lega Marche, whose complete name is Lega Marche per Salvini Premier, is a regionalist political party active in Marche. The party was a "national" section of Lega Nord (LN) from 1991 to 2000 and has been the regional section of Lega per Salvini Premier (LSP) in Marche since 2020.
The Politics of Marche, Italy takes place in a framework of a semi-presidential representative democracy, whereby the President of the Region is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Legislative power is vested in the Regional Council, while executive power is exercised by the Regional Government led by the President, who is directly elected by the people. The current Statute, which regulates the functioning of the regional institutions, has been in force since 2004.
François Patriat is a French politician of La République En Marche! (LREM) who has been serving as president of the party's group in the Senate since 2017. He has represented the Côte-d'Or department in the Senate since 2008. Patriat also served as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in 2002 and President of the Regional Council of Burgundy from 2004 until 2015. He was a member of the Socialist Party before joining La République En Marche! in 2017.
Étienne Blanc is a French politician who has served as a Senator for Rhône since 2020. A member of The Republicans (LR), he previously served as Mayor of Divonne-les-Bains (1991–2019) and represented the 3rd constituency of Ain in the National Assembly (2002–2016). Blanc was also First Vice President of the Regional Council of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes from 2016 to 2020.

The 2020 Marche regional election in Marche, Italy, took place on 20–21 September. It was originally scheduled to take place on 31 May 2020, but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic in Italy. The centre-right coalition candidate, Senator and former Mayor of Potenza Picena Francesco Acquaroli, defeated the Democratic candidate, Maurizio Mangialardi, who was serving as Mayor of Senigallia. Acquaroli was the first centre-right candidate elected President in the history of the region and was elected with 49.3% of the regional popular vote, winning 20 of 31 seats in the regional council. The election generated some controversy because the centre-right candidate was present at a dinner to commemorate the March on Rome on October 28, 2019, with other far-right Italian politicians. It was the first election during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy in the Marche region.
Julien Bargeton is a French politician who has served as a Senator for Paris since 2017. A former member of the Socialist Party (PS), which he left in June 2017 to join La République En Marche! (LREM), he previously served as Deputy Mayor of Paris for Transport (2012–2014) under Bertrand Delanoë and for Finance (2014–2017) under Anne Hidalgo.

Regional elections were held in France on 20 June and 27 June 2021. At stake were the regional councils in metropolitan and overseas France including the Corsican Assembly, Assembly of French Guiana and Assembly of Martinique, all for a six-year term. The Departmental Council of Mayotte, which also exercises the powers of a region, also participated in this election, because the departmental elections were held at the same time. Eighteen regional presidencies were at stake, with thirteen in mainland France and Corsica, as well as five overseas. Though they do not have legislative autonomy, these territorial collectivities manage sizable budgets. Moreover, regional elections are often perceived as a mid-term opinion poll. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the regional and departmental elections were postponed, first to 13 and 20 June 2021 and then to 20 and 27 June 2021.
