Eliezer Joldan Memorial College Leh, Ladakh (also known as Govt. Degree College, Leh) is the government general degree college in Leh, in the union territory of Ladakh, India. It offers undergraduate courses in science, commerce and arts.

About college

The college was established in 1994 and affiliated to the University of Ladakh. The college is named after Ladakhi educator Eliezer Joldan.

In the present running session 2018-19, there are 940 students studying in the college with 229 boys and 711 girls.[ needs update ] Like in all other affiliated colleges of University of Ladakh, the semester system is followed.

Eliezer Joldan

Eliezer Joldan (1916-2001) was the first trained graduate to profess teaching as a profession in Ladakh. He was born in 1916 to Jonathan Tharchin Joldan and Chamnyet. He got his bachelor's degree in education from the Punjab University, Lahore. He died at the age of 85 at Leh. The Govt. Degree College at Leh is named after him. His students includes top political leaders, doctors, scholars and other intelligentsia of Ladakh on 23 June 2001. He would always prefer the traditional Ladakhi Goncha over western pants and shirts.

The Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, formerly known as the School of Buddhist Philosophy, located in Leh town of Ladakh is a deemed university under Ministry of Culture. It was founded in 1959 and formerly affiliated to the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi.

Ladakh Marathon Marathon held in northern India

The Ladakh Marathon is a marathon held in Leh, a town in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh. It claims to be the highest marathon in the world, held at a height of 11,500 to 17,618 feet. The seventh edition of the Ladakh Marathon was held in 2018 and its ninth edition is happening in September 2022 after being cancelled for two subsequent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is full member of Association of International Marathons and Distance Races. The marathon was organised "to foster national spirit and to encourage sport in Ladakh". It is the fifth marathon from India to get international recognition.

Nimmu–Padum–Darcha road Road in India

Nimmu–Padum–Darcha road or Zanskar Highway is a road under construction between the Indian union territory of Ladakh and the state of Himachal Pradesh, passing through the region of Zanskar. It connects Nimmu in the Indus Valley to Padum, the capital of Zanskar, to Darcha village in Lahul and Spiti. It provides an alternative to the Leh–Manali Highway in linking Ladakh with the rest of India. It is being built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) of the Indian army. Construction of road is expected to be completed by late 2023. Already completed Atal tunnel and the under-construction Shingo La Tunnel which will be completed by 2025 will provide all weather connectivity.
