Elizabeth Reiter is an American operatic soprano who has been based at the Oper Frankfurt from 2013, where she covered a broad repertoire from Armida in Handel's Rinaldo to the double role Renee/Alice in the German premiere of Olga Neuwirth's Lost Highway . She performed at international opera houses and festivals, such as singing Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni in Tanglewood, conducted by James Levine.

Career

Reiter was born in Chicago [1] where she was a member in the Lyric Opera's children's choir. [2] She sang as a child in over 100 performances, for example in Puccini's La Bohème and Tosca , Ponchielli's La Gioconda , Boito's Mefistofele , Bizet's Carmen , Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades , Verdi's Otello and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel at the Lyric Opera. [3] At the age of 16, Reiter made her professional debut as Young Maria Celeste in the world premiere of Glass's Galileo Galilei (Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and London’s Barbican Center). [2] [4] She studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music [5] where she performed several roles in the opera program. [6] She took part in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. [5]

Following two years in the Opern Studio, Reiter joined the ensemble of the Oper Frankfurt in the 2013/14 season, where she appeared in roles including Armida in Handel's Rinaldo , [7] Mozart's Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte , Gretel in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel , [8] Valencienne in Lehàr's Die lustige Witwe , [9] [10] Anne Trulove in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress , and the title role in Janáček's Das schlaue Füchslein . [5] [11] In 2018, she appeared in the double role Renee/Alice in the German premiere of Olga Neuwirth's Lost Highway . [12] [13] In September 2021, she appeared as Melissa in Handel's Amadigi , conducted by Roland Böer, and alongside Brennan Hall in the title role, Kateryna Kasper and Beth Taylor. A reviewer noted her sharp coloraturas and dramatic outbursts, portraying the harsh character, and intense acting up to her death scene. [14]

In the 2022-23 Frankfurt season, Reiter debuted as Tatiana in Eugene Onegin and the title role in Orff’s Die Kluge as well as repeated her acclaimed performances as Asteria in Händel’s Tamerlano and Janacek’s Vixen. For her performance as die Kluge, Opera News wrote: [15]

“As a farmer's daughter who ends up married to an arrogant, suspicious king, American soprano and ensemble member Elizabeth Reiter made a phenomenal role debut. Her agile, powerful and dramatically expressive voice was an ideal fit for the shrewd, savvy title character.”

She appeared as a guest at Opera Memphis and the Opera Philadelphia among others. She performed as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Tanglewood Music Center, conducted by James Levine, and as The Dragonfly in Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges at the Castleton Festival, conducted by Lorin Maazel. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she gave house concerts from her home. [5]

She has been praised for her convincing acting as well as the expressiveness of her lyric voice, with performances including the Royal Opera House in London, the Bolshoi Theatre and Oper Frankfurt.

Johannes Martin Kränzle is a German baritone in opera and concert who has made an international career. For years a member of the Oper Frankfurt, he was chosen as Singer of the Year in 2011 after creating the leading role in Wolfgang Rihm's Dionysos at the Salzburg Festival. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House as Don Alfonso in Mozart's Così fan tutte, and at the Bayreuth Festival as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 2017.

Christof Loy is a German stage director especially for opera, whose work received several awards. A freelance director, he has staged operas from Baroque to premieres of new works at major European opera houses and festivals. He is known for directing works by Mozart.

Kateryna Kasper is a Ukrainian operatic soprano. A member of the Oper Frankfurt, she has appeared in major international opera houses. She has performed in recitals and recordings. Her broad repertory includes works from Cavalieri's Spiel von Seele und Körper to the premiere of Der goldene Drache by Péter Eötvös.

Bohumil Herlischka was a Czech opera director. After years at the National Theatre, he worked from 1957 predominantly in German opera houses, introducing a style later known as Regietheater. He directed several productions at the Oper Frankfurt and developed a close connection to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein where he staged operas by Leoš Janáček, presenting a cycle of six operas in the 1977–78 season. He staged Schoenberg's Moses und Aaron at the Hamburg State Opera, including a tour to Israel. He focused on rarely played works such as Meyerbeer's Le prophète at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and on contemporary opera such as Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and the world premiere of Alexander Goehr's Behold the Sun.

Beth Taylor is a Scottish operatic mezzo-soprano, who has performed mainly in Europe. At the Oper Frankfurt, she performed a title role in Rossini's Bianca e Falliero.

Cecelia Hall is an American operatic mezzo-soprano. A native of North Carolina, Hall trained as a singer at DePaul University and the Juilliard School before becoming a member of the young artist programs at the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She made her European debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2014 and became a resident artist at Oper Frankfurt in 2016; a position she remains in as of 2024. She continues to perform as a guest artist in operas and concerts with other organizations internationally. She has performed leading roles in the mezzo-soprano repertoire including title roles, both women such as Purcell's Dido, Rossini's La Cenerentola, and Piazzolla's María de Buenos Aires, and men including Cavalli's Eliogabalo, Handel's Ariodante, Serse and Teseo, Mozart's Ascanio in Alba and Humperdinck's Hänsel.
