Elmer Bernard Smick (July 10, 1921 - December 7, 1994) was an Old Testament scholar, professor, and former president of the Evangelical Theological Society.

Background and education

Smick was born in Baltimore, Maryland and married childhood sweetheart Jane Harrison on August 19, 1944. [1] He earned his B.A. (1944) from The Kings College, his Th.B. (1947) and S.T.M (1948) from Faith Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. (1951) from the Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning. He also completed post-doctoral studies at Brandeis University (1958) New York University (1967). [1]

Academic career

Smick taught ancient history and Semitic studies at Shelton College while pastoring Bible Presbyterian Church in Trenton, New Jersey. From 1956 to 1971, he was professor of Old Testament language and literature at Covenant Theological Seminary. From 1971 to 1991, he was professor of Old Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. In 1976, the NIV Committee on Bible Translation invited Smick "to assist it in the final editorial review" of the first edition of the Old Testament. [2] Smick served as president of the Evangelical Theological Society in 1988, as well as on the advisory board of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew, and was a fellow of the Institute for Biblical Research. Bruce M. Metzger American biblical scholar (1914-2007)

Bruce Manning Metzger was an American biblical scholar, Bible translator and textual critic who was a long time professor at Princeton Theological Seminary and Bible editor who served on the board of the American Bible Society and United Bible Societies. He was a scholar of Greek, New Testament, and New Testament textual criticism, and wrote prolifically on these subjects. Metzger was one of the most influential New Testament scholars of the 20th century.

David Noel Freedman

David Noel Freedman (1922–2008) was an American biblical scholar, author, editor, archaeologist, and, after his conversion from Judaism, a Presbyterian minister. He was one of the first Americans to work on the Dead Sea Scrolls. He is the son of the writer David Freedman. He died of a heart ailment.

James Barr (1924–2006) was a liberal Scottish Old Testament scholar, known for his contribution on how vocabulary and structure of the Hebrew language may reflect a particular theological mindset. At the University of Oxford, he was the Oriel Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture from 1976 to 1978, and the Regius Professor of Hebrew from 1978 to 1989.

Bruce K. Waltke is an American Reformed evangelical professor of Old Testament and Hebrew. He has held professorships in the Old Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary, Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, and Knox Theological Seminary in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. George Howard Guthrie is Professor of New Testament at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Guthrie holds a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies and is considered to be one of the premier authorities in the United States on the Book of Hebrews in the New Testament..
