Equestrianism made its Pan American Games debut at the first Pan American Games in 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It has appeared at every Pan American Games since. The current Pan American Games equestrian disciplines are Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping. In each discipline, both individual and team medals are awarded. Women and men compete together on equal terms.

Contents

Equestrian disciplines and the equestrian component of Modern Pentathlon are also the only Pan American Games events that involve animals. The horse is considered as much an athlete as the rider.

The International Governing Body for equestrian sports is the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). [1]

Eventing

In 1991 in Havana and 2003 in Santo Domingo the eventing competition were not held. Rather, a Pan American Eventing Championship was held in Chatsworth, Georgia, United States in 1991 and in 2003 the competition was held in Fair Hill in 2003. [2]

Susan "Sue" Marie Nattrass, is a Canadian trap shooter and medical researcher in osteoporosis. She was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Competing at an elite international level from the 1970s through the 2010s, Nattrass has had multiple appearances, in one or both of trap or double trap, at Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and Pan American Games. Nattrass is a repeat World Champion and repeat medalist at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and Pan American Games. She was the flag bearer for Canada at the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports is the international governing body of equestrian sports. The FEI headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Theodora Elisabeth Gerarda "Anky" van Grunsven is a Dutch dressage champion who is the only rider to record three successive Olympic wins in the same event. Along with her Olympic successes, she has won numerous medals at the World Equestrian Games (WEG), and is the only rider to have competed at every WEG since they began in 1990. Between 1990 and 2006, she competed at the Games in dressage, but in 2010 she was named as part of the Dutch reining team, marking a major change in discipline.

Karen Lende O'Connor is an American equestrian who competes in three-day eventing. Although she did not come from a family of equestrians, her interest in horses started at an early age, and she received her first horse for her 11th birthday. O'Connor began competing internationally in the late 1970s, and in 1986 began riding for the US national eventing team. Since then, she had ridden in five Olympic Games, three World Equestrian Games and two Pan-American Games, winning multiple medals, including a team silver at the 1996 Olympic Games and a team bronze at the 2000 Olympic Games. She has also posted numerous wins and top-10 finishes at other international events. As of 2013, O'Connor is not competing, having suffered fractures to two thoracic vertebrae during a fall at a competition in October 2012.

The 2007 Pan American Games, officially known as the XV Pan American Games, were a major continental multi-sport event that took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 13 to 29, 2007. A total of 5,633 athletes from 42 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 332 events in 34 sports and in 47 disciplines. During the Games, 95 new Pan American records were set; 2,196 medals were awarded; 1,262 doping control tests were performed and about 15,000 volunteers participated in the organization of the event, which was an Olympic qualification for 13 International Federations (IFs).

Egypt competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012, sending one of its largest delegations ever. A total of 110 Egyptian athletes participated in 83 events across 20 sports, with more women taking part than ever before. The nation's flagbearer in the opening ceremonies was Hesham Mesbah, a judoka who was Egypt's only medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Egypt won two medals during the course of the Games: Alaaeldin Abouelkassem earned silver in the men's foil, becoming the first competitor from an African nation to win a fencing medal, while Karam Gaber captured silver in the men's 84 kg Greco-Roman wrestling event. The Pan American Games sports comprise all the sports contested in the Summer Olympic Games. In addition, traditional and popular sports throughout the Americas which are not contested at the Olympic Games are also contested such as bowling and baseball. As of 2015, the Pan American Games included 36 sports with 51 disciplines and 364 events. The number and kinds of events may change slightly from one Pan American Games to another.

Equestrian competitions at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, were held in 2003 at the Palmarejo Equestrian Center. The venue seated 600 people and was 65 km from the athlete's village. Eventing competition were held separately as a Pan American Eventing Championship in Fair Hill, United States and were officially not included in the results.

The International Tent Pegging Federation, formerly known as the World Tent Pegging Federation is the international governing body of the Equestrian discipline of tent pegging. The ITPF is responsible for the organisation of tent pegging's major international tournaments, notably the World Cup which commenced in 2014, and other international events.

Equestrian competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto were held from July 11 to 25 at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave. The cross-country portion of eventing took place at nearby Will O' Wind Farm, which is located in Mono. Due to naming rights the venue was known as the latter for the duration of the games. The competition was split into three disciplines, dressage, eventing and show jumping. Each discipline awarded a team and individual set of medals.

Equestrian competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru were held from July 27 to August 10. The venue for the competition is the Equestrian Club Militar La Molina. A total of 150 athletes are scheduled to compete in the three disciplines of dressage, eventing and jumping, each with an individual and team event.
