Ethan Kross

Ethan Kross is an American experimental psychologist, neuroscientist and writer, who specializes in emotion regulation. [1] He is a professor of psychology and management at the University of Michigan and director of the Emotion & Self Control Laboratory there. [1] Kross lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. [2]

Early life and education

Kross was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a degree from the University of Pennsylvania, a PhD in psychology from Columbia University, and a post-doctoral fellowship in social-affective neuroscience. [3]

Career

Since 2008, Kross has been at the University of Michigan, where he is now a professor of psychology and management. [3] [1] He founded the Emotion & Self Control Laboratory at the university and is its director. [3] [1] He studies the science of introspection, [1] "the silent conversations people have with themselves: internal dialogues that powerfully influence how they live their lives." [2]

A study by Kross and Philippe Verduyn of Leuven University in Belgium has shown that the more a person uses Facebook, the less satisfied they are with life. [4] [5] Other research by Kross and a colleague found that "the way that we process negative experiences can help reset that behavior." They found that when remembering a past experience, if people use self-distancing techniques—psychologically distancing themselves from a situation that is happening to them—"their stress levels and physical health indicators improved, and they were also better able to solve problems and resolve conflicts." [6]

Self-help or self-improvement is a self-guided improvement—economically, intellectually, or emotionally—often with a substantial psychological basis.

Feelings are subjective self-contained phenomenal experiences. According to the APA Dictionary of Psychology, a feeling is "a self-contained phenomenal experience"; and feelings are "subjective, evaluative, and independent of the sensations, thoughts, or images evoking them". Two major scholars who have influenced cultural communication studies are Edward T. Hall and Geert Hofstede. Edward T. Hall, who was an American anthropologist, is considered to be the founder of cultural communication and the theory of proxemics. The theory of proxemics focuses on how individuals use space while communicating depending on cultural backgrounds or social settings. The space in between individuals can be identified in four different ranges. For example, 0 inches signifies intimate space while 12 feet signifies public space. Geert Hofstede was a social psychologist who founded the theory of cultural dimension. In his theory, there are five dimensions that aim to measure differences between different cultures. The five dimensions are power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism versus collectivism, masculinity versus femininity, and Chronemics.

The fading affect bias, more commonly known as FAB, is a psychological phenomenon in which memories associated with negative emotions tend to be forgotten more quickly than those associated with positive emotions. It is important to note that FAB only refers to the feelings one has associated with the memories and not the content of the memories themselves. Early research studied FAB retrospectively, or through personal reflection, which brought about some criticism because retrospective analysis can be affected by subjective retrospective biases. However, new research using non-retrospective recall studies have found evidence for FAB., and the phenomenon has become largely accepted.

Serena Chen is an American social psychologist known for her work on the self and interpersonal relationships. She is Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and currently serves as Chair of the Psychology Department. Her research utilizes a social-cognition framework and has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other news outlets.

Toxic positivity or positive toxicity is dysfunctional emotional management without the full acknowledgment of negative emotions, particularly anger and sadness.

Ozlem Nefise Ayduk is an American social psychologist at U.C. Berkeley researching close relationships, emotion regulation, and the development of self-regulation in children. She is a fellow at the Society of Experimental Social Psychology and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. She has contributed content to several psychology handbooks, dictionaries, and encyclopedias.

The book was praised by reviewers for its systematic clarity. The book explains how inner, silent dialogues are intrinsic to human nature, offering advice on how to avoid unproductive mental chatter, take advantage of inner dialogues to reflect on life's circumstances, and arrive at sound judgments for making decisions.
