The European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) is the European association of people with interests in the field of immunogenetics.
During the early 1980s, members of the Committee created a more formal organisation and the organisation was made official in the mid-1980s. It was initiated to give scientists an opportunity to collaborate with one another, and to ensure that their findings were accurate and of high quality. EFI sets a series of standards for laboratories to adhere to and works to create relationships with other organisations worldwide that carry out similar work. [1]
There are now over 200 laboratories accredited by the EFI. [2] These laboratories are found not only in Europe, but also in Israel, South Africa and Mexico and have met the criteria that have been set out by EFI. The laboratories undergo regular inspections to ensure that they are continuing to follow the standards and that they are producing the high-quality work expected. [3]
There are various committees within the EFI, including a Standards and Quality Assurance, Accreditation, Education and Scientific. These ensure that the high standards set out by the federation are adhered to.[ citation needed ]
The current president of the EFI is Ann-Margaret Little. [4]
There are other immunogenetic societies worldwide. These include ASEATTA, [5] ASHI, [6] BSHI, [7] and DGI. [8]

Involved in the discovery and definition of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system of genetic markers, Bodmer became one of the world's leading experts in HLA serology and the genetic definition of the HLA system. A prominent figure in the field of immunogenetics, her discoveries helped the understanding and development of knowledge about HLA associations with diseases including acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and cancer. As well as being a distinguished scientist in her own right, she collaborated throughout her career with her husband, the human and cancer geneticist Sir Walter Bodmer. The couple had three children.
The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) is an independent, non-profit organization founded during the 4th International Seed Testing Congress in 1924. Its members work to promote uniform methods of evaluating seeds being sold internationally to facilitate the international trading of seeds and to contribute to global food security.
