Evan Bernstein (אבן ברנשטיין; born April 16, 1960) is an Israeli-American former Olympic wrestler for Israel. [1] [2]

Personal life

Bernstein was born in the United States to Stanley and Jacqueline Bernstein, and is Jewish. [3] [4] He graduated from Richardson High School in 1978. [4] He then wrestled for Richland College, in Dallas, Texas, and for the University of Minnesota (graduating in 1984). [4] [5] [6] [7] He moved from the United States to Israel in 1984, and served in the Israel Defense Forces. [4] He then moved to North Texas in the United States with his family in 1999, and now lives in Allen, Texas. [4]

His wife is Ora Bernstein. [4] His sons Ophir and Eden are also wrestlers. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] Bernstein also has a daughter, Hadar. [4]

Wrestling career

Bernstein was 6 feet 3.5 inches (193 cm) tall and weighed 205 lbs (93 kg) when he competed in the Olympics. [1]

He competed in wrestling in the 1981 Maccabiah Games (for the US), and in the 1985 Maccabiah Games (for Israel). [13] At the 1985 World Wrestling Championships in Norway Bernstein placed 8th, and at the 1986 World Wrestling Championships in Hungary he placed 7th. [4]

Bernstein competed for Israel at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul at the age of 28 in Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling in the Light-Heavyweight (90 kg) category. [1] Bernstein beat Kamal Ibrahim of Egypt in the first round by decision, lost to Jean-Francois Court of France in the second round by passivity, received a bye in the next round, and lost to Franz Pitschmann of Austria in the fourth round by passivity. The 7th Maccabiah Games in 1965 saw 1,500 athletes from 29 different countries compete in 21 sports. It was the first Maccabiah Games for Iran, Jamaica, Peru, and Venezuela. The United States delegation won the most gold medals, followed by Israel, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Mexico and the Netherlands, Southern Rhodesia, Australia, Argentina and Italy, and Brazil, Canada, Denmark, and Sweden with one each.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2009 Maccabiah Games</span>

The 18th Maccabiah Games, were held in July 2009. According to the organizing committee these were the largest games held yet. These Games were the world's fifth-largest sporting event, behind the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Police and Fire Games, and Universiade. On the 13 July, more than 6,000 Jewish athletes from all over the world joined Team Israel's 3,000 participants at the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv District, Israel, for the opening ceremony. American swimmer Jason Lezak was given the honor of lighting the Maccabiah torch at the Opening Ceremony.

Abraham Kurland was a Danish Olympic silver medalist wrestler. David Zilberman is a Canadian Olympic freestyle wrestler. He is a two-time Canadian champion. In 2003, he won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships, wrestling at 84 kg. In 2004, he won a silver medal at the FISU World University Championships, at 84 kg. In 2005, he won the Canada Cup gold medal, and the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships silver medal. He took 5th in the 2006 World Championships, and won a silver medal at the 2006 FISU World University Championships. He won a gold medal at the 2007 Senior Canadian National Championships.

Oleg Ladik is a Ukrainian-born Canadian former Olympic wrestler, who won a gold medal in the 1993 Maccabiah Games in Israel. He was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Ari Michael Taub is a Canadian Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler. He won two gold medals at the 1989 Maccabiah Games in Israel, and a gold medal at the 2007 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. He competed for Canada in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
