Fashion Malawi Edition or "F.A.M.E" is the first organization in Malawi that works to market and develop the Malawian fashion Industry through capacity building and professional development training. It was founded in 2010 by Zilanie Gondwe and Inge Knapen to build a fashion in industry in Malawi after identifying voids in a previously underdeveloped industry. [1] [2] They are Malawi's leading fashion organization and a pioneer in Malawi's fashion industry. They regularly host national fashion shows in Malawi that have received public acclaim. This includes the Kia Malawi Fashion Show. [3] They are credited for creating an industry which created space for fashion related businesses to grow in Malawi. They are credited for launching the career of fashion designer Lily Alfonso. In November 2012, they announced that they will host Malawi's first " Malawi Fashion Week". [4]

Industry and capacity building work

FAME has been supporting the fashion industry at the grassroots level since inception. This includes capacity building in the industry. [5] They are credited for fostering the growth of a fashion industry in Malawi. Malawi has seen the growth of new fashion related businesses since their inception, including modelling agencies, fashion houses, and fashion photography. They also engage in professional development workshops, including the finance training for students to Don Bosco Technical College and Samalani Youth Center. [6] [7] In attempts to grow the industry, they also support and sponsor events by fashion organizations in Malawi. [8]

FAME events

FAME creates a platform where the Malawi fashion industry can showcase their work. There events have attracted local, regional and international talent in its events. [9] local talent has included Tuccie Creations, Memory Chimchere of the Diva Yn label, and Debbie Gadama of Phade label, Manuka Fashions, and Isaac Bukhu of Haus of Gola. [10] International designers have included Peggy 'O' (Kenya) and Pallade Segapo (South Africa), Mustafa Hassanali (Tanzania), Mehmuna Ibrahim-Schumann (Mali). [11] [12] Fame organized a fashion show as a part of the Africa Movie Academy Awards nomination gala that took place in Malawi in March 2013. [13]

A leader in Malawi's fashion industry, in November 2012, FAME announced that it will host Malawi's first ever Fashion Week in 2013. [14]

Islam is the second largest religion in Malawi behind Christianity. Nearly all of Malawi's Muslims adhere to Sunni Islam. Though difficult to assess, according to the CIA Factbook, in 2018 about 13.8% of the country's population was Muslim. Muslim organisations in the country claim a figure of 15-20%. Anina progressed from being a model to a fashion industry pioneer when she developed Intel Curie-powered shape-shifting robot dresses. She developed for Intel the 360Fashion Network's smart gloves worn by 162 dancers on CCTV's Chinese New Year Festival Gala show, "Spring Wind" performance. The gloves were powered by Intel's Curie, with the LED light pattern generated using gesture recognition. PBS Television shot a documentary about Anina, who was interviewed by Robert Cringely at the start of 360Fashion Network as the first fashion blogger network. PBS Television's Nerd TV interviewed Anina as the ninth guest and the first woman in the series about the future of mobile technology. CRI Radio in China filmed a documentary titled "My China Life." Vanessa Nsona is a Malawian fashion designer and entrepreneur best known as the creator of Fashion brand, Dorovee which is Malawi's first eco-friendly fashion accessory company. She designs hand made accessories including bags, shoes, bowties necklaces and other jewelry using Malawian fabric and materials. She launched the brand in 2012 in Malawi. Her designs have appeared in Malawi fashion shows, including Malawi Fashion Week 2014 and at the Malawi at 50 celebrations in Washington DC. An established designers in Malawi, she mentors and trains fashion designers both in and out of the country. She has co-hosted workshops in Malawi. In Zimbabwe, she held a workshop on 'Building a Sustainable Fashion Brand' together with Zedlabel at the US embassy. She is a member of Soroptmist International of Blantyre (SIB) which helps disadvantaged women and children. She also launched Project Luso, which creates and promotes Malawian fashion designs to help disadvantaged women and mentors talent in the fashion industry together with non-profit Samaritan Trust.

Esther Jolobala is a Malawian politician who has served in the Parliament of Malawi since 2014, representing the Machinga East constituency as a member of the United Democratic Front.

Nyasa Music Awards are Malawian award show that was established in early 2017 to celebrate entertainers and other minorities in music, fashion and philanthropy. The annual presentation event that takes place in major cities of the country features performances by artists and they are one of the major Malawi's music industry awards. The event recognizes Malawian music from all genres, including traditional, soul, and gospel. The awards also promote culture, with the 2017 event host of an African Print party that encourages people to showcase their traditional outfits. The awards include media sister awards and its categories are split into male and female.
