Dr. Fausta Mosha - Senior Laboratory Consultant

Fausta Shakiwa Mosha (born 14 April 1976) is a Tanzanian senior Laboratory consultant for the United States Association of Public Health Laboratories of East Africa for East and South Africa regions. She has been the Director for the National Health Laboratory Quality Assurance and Training Centre for the Ministry of Health since 2011. [1] [ failed verification ]

Early life and education

Born in Tanga, region, Tanzania, Mosha commenced her education at Tanga International School and later moved to Azimio Primary school, both in Tanga between the year 1982 and 1988. From the year 1989–1992, she went to Mbeya and Loleza Secondary Schools respectively and later on to Kilakala and Loleza High School where she graduated in 1995. [2] She obtained her MD from Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, University of Dar es Salaam and Phd in 2014 from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium[ citation needed ].

Career

Ministry of Health

She was offered the director's position for National Health Laboratory Quality Assurance and Training Centre (NHLQATC) at MoH, Tanzania in 2010 and in the same year, won an International project for 9 African countries and 11 countries in the Caribbean region. [3]

NHL/QATC

Fausta worked at overseeing and improving service and delivery at NHLQATC. She co-authored several articles and medical journals and led collaborations between the CDC and the National health Laboratory in Tanzania. [4]

She was Principal Investigator (PI) for the project “Proficiency Testing for HIV Rapid Tests, Biological Safety Cabinet Certification and Laboratory Quality Management System Strengthening in Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra leone, Cameroon, Angola, Lesotho, Ethiopia, Swaziland, Kenya and 11 Countries in the Caribbean Region, a project aimed at strengthening 9 African and 11 Caribbean Countries' laboratory capacities to support HIV Care and Treatment [5] and was a Honorary Lecturer at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. In addition, she was CO-PI for HIV Population Impact Assessment, Tanzania, [7] Project Manager for the East Africa Public Health Laboratory Networking Project (EAPHLNP). Managing a $30 Million Regional project on strengthening capacity to prepare and respond to regional (East Africa) outbreaks and a Principal Investigator for the CDC-MOH cooperative agreement on the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) ( [5] )

Fausta started doing private consulting in May 2017 and is also currently a Board Member for the African Society for Laboratory Medicine and Board member for International SLMTA (Strengthening Laboratory Management Towards Accreditation) Governance Board [5]

Personal life

She is married to Prof. Eliangiringa Amos Kaale [8] and together they have three children.

Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief United States governmental initiative

The United States President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is a United States governmental initiative to address the global HIV/AIDS epidemic and help save the lives of those suffering from the disease. Launched by U.S. President George W. Bush in 2003, as of May 2020, PEPFAR has provided about $90 billion in cumulative funding for HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research since its inception, making it the largest global health program focused on a single disease in history until the COVID-19 pandemic. PEPFAR is implemented by a combination of U.S. government agencies in over 50 countries and overseen by the Global AIDS Coordinator at the U.S. Department of State. As of 2021, PEPFAR has saved over 20 million lives, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a field of research, healthcare, and social activism that explores the health of an individual's reproductive system and sexual wellbeing during all stages of their life.

ISO 15189 Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence is an international standard that specifies the quality management system requirements particular to medical laboratories. The standard was developed by the International Organisation for Standardization's Technical Committee 212. ISO/TC 212 assigned ISO 15189 to a working group to prepare the standard based on the details of ISO/IEC 17025:1999 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. This working group included provision of advice to medical laboratory users, including specifics on the collection of patient samples, the interpretation of test results, acceptable turnaround times, how testing is to be provided in a medical emergency, and the lab's role in the education and training of health care staff. While the standard is based on ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 9001, it is a unique document that takes into consideration the specific requirements of the medical environment and the importance of the medical laboratory to patient care.

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) is a membership organization in the United States representing the laboratories that protect the health and safety of the public. APHL serves as a liaison between public health laboratories and federal and international agencies. Membership consists of local, state, county, and territorial public health laboratories; public health environmental, agricultural and veterinary laboratories; and corporations and individuals with an interest in public health and laboratory science. APHL is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization with a history of over fifty years.

Public health laboratories (PHLs) are governmental reference laboratories that protect the public against diseases and other health hazards. The 2005 International Health Regulations came into force in June 2007, with 196 binding countries that recognised that certain public health incidents, extending beyond disease, ought to be designated as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), as they pose a significant global threat. The PHLs serve as national hazard detection centres, and forward these concerns to the World Health Organization.

Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences

Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is a public university in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It is accredited by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

Kampala International University (KIU) is a private, not-for-profit institution based in Uganda. It was established in 2001 and assumed chartered status in 2009.

Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) was established in 2002 for the primary purpose of HIV vaccine development and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda. It is one of the 5 international research sites established by the Department of Defense (DoD) United States HIV Research Program (MHRP), a program centered at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. MUWRP's main facility is centrally located in Kampala, near the Makerere University College of Health Sciences where the MUWRP laboratory is located. The main facility includes the clinic, administrative and data offices.

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), established within Makerere University, is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization which aims to strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases; through research and capacity development. In pursuit of its mission both in Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa, IDI provides care to People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and other infectious diseases, builds capacity among healthcare workers through training and ongoing support, maintains a focus on prevention, and carries out relevant research.

Julie Makani Tanzanian medical researcher

Julie Makani is a Tanzanian medical researcher. From 2014 she is Wellcome Trust Research Fellow and Associate Professor in the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). Also a visiting fellow and consultant to the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, she is based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In 2011, she received the Royal Society Pfizer Award for her work with sickle cell disease.

Ocean Road Cancer Institute Hospital in Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania

Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) is a public, specialized, tertiary care medical facility owned by the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. It is the largest comprehensive cancer center in the country.

Dr. Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho is a Tanzanian-born paediatrician and public health leader who until December 31, 2015 served as World Health Organization (WHO) Assistant Director General for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases based in Geneva, Switzerland. From 2016 to 2019, she served as Board Chair of RBM Partnership To End Malaria. Before joining WHO in 1999, Mpanju-Shumbusho was Director General of The East, Central and Southern African Health Community (ECSA-HC) formerly known as the Commonwealth Regional Health Community for East, Central and Southern Africa (CRHC-ECSA). Mpanju-Shumbusho is a co-founder, board member, and volunteer for the not-for-profit organization Adventures in Health, Education, and Agricultural Development, which was founded in 1981 to provide hands-on, people-to-people assistance to underserved communities in Africa and inner-city United States. She was also co-founder of the Medical Women Association of Tanzania and served as Treasurer and Executive Committee member of the Medical Association of Tanzania. In 2019, she was awarded the Multisector Partnership Honour by Malaria No More as one of the top Women Leading the Fight Against Malaria. Mpanju-Shumbusho is married with two adult children.

Muhimbili National Hospital is a 1259-bed hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It is the national referral hospital as well as teaching and research facility for the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. It offers speciality care across the spectrum of clinical medicine. About 40% of its beds are for private patients.

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Public health agency

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is a public health agency of the African Union to support the public health initiatives of member states and strengthen the capacity of their health institutions to deal with disease threats. The Africa CDC ideas was proposed by the government of Ethiopia in 2013 during a TB/HIV special summit in Abuja, Nigeria. From 2013 to 2016, the modalities and statue of Africa CDC were developed and the specialized agency was officially launched in January 2017.

Japhet Killewo is a Tanzanian doctor and epidemiologist in Kagera, Tanzania. He was the former Chair of Tanzanian Public Health Association and currently an epidemiology professor at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). His research area focuses on HIV/AIDS epidemiology research in Kagera region in Tanzania. As a clinician, he also focuses on AIDS control and mother-to-child intervention in Tanzania. As a scholar, he publishes actively in international journals and participated in many projects across the globe, which are organised and supported by the European Union, as well as World Bank and USAIDS.
