Zhenjiang,alternately romanized as Chinkiang,is a prefecture-level city in Jiangsu Province,China. It lies on the southern bank of the Yangtze River near its intersection with the Grand Canal. It is opposite Yangzhou and between Nanjing and Changzhou. Zhenjiang was formerly the provincial capital of Jiangsu and remains as an important transportation hub. As of the 2020 census,its total population was 3,210,418 inhabitants whom 1,266,790 lived in the built-up area made of the 3 urban districts. The town is best known both in China and abroad for Chinkiang vinegar,a fragrant black vinegar that is a staple of Chinese cooking.

The Battle of Shanghai (太平軍二攻上海) was a major engagement of the Taiping Rebellion that occurred from June 1861 to July 1862. British and French troops used modern artillery on a large scale for the first time in China. Wei Changsheng,courtesy name Wanqing (婉卿),also known as Wei San,was a Chinese qinqiang actor of the Qing dynasty who played huadan roles. In 1779,during his second trip to Beijing,he created such a sensation that theatregoers flocked to his performances away from gaoqiang and kunqu,thereby permanently changing the landscape of Chinese opera. In order to curb the craze the Qing government expelled him and qinqiang from Beijing in 1785. He went south to perform kunqu in Yangzhou,but many of his innovations and art remained in the capital and were absorbed by Peking opera several decades later.
