FORA.tv was formed in 2005 to produce and distribute videos on the most compelling public conversations regarding issues and ideas that matter. It was dissolved in 2018. Its early impact is evident from its 2009 recognition by TIME magazine as one of the "50 Best Websites of 2009." [1] [2] The company served more than 500 organizations, including leading media organizations and academic institutions.[ citation needed ]

Company history

FORA was founded by Brian Gruber, formerly the first marketing director for C-SPAN in 2005. He assembled a founding team made up of Bob Appel, Stuart Schulzke, Trevar Mazza, and Allen Claghorn. [3] Gruber intended it as a forum for the exchange of ideas and conversation, (hence the name fora, plural for forum), and to provide video services to conferences. By 2008, the company had partnered with numerous schools and institutions, acquiring a library of public lectures and colloquia. [4]

The firm was funded by private investors. [5]

Services

FORA.tv's unique content mission led to long-term partnerships with the Aspen Institute, Atlantic Media, WIRED magazine, and more than a hundred think tanks, universities, and media organizations. It also provided services in video production and distribution. The revenue methods for its partners included sponsorships, pay-per-view, and advertising. For a decade before its dissolution, FORA.tv had offices in San Francisco and New York City.

Video library

FORA.tv built a digital forum where people could discuss information on technology, politics, culture, entertainment, and more. Its curated library featured more than 25,000 unmediated videos drawn from its clients’ live events, lectures, and debates at universities, think tanks, conferences, etc.

The library provided several ways to interact with the videos, such as comments, transcripts, and translations. [6] In February 2009, the company partnered with Wired in creating a channel for videos about technological, science, business, and cultural issues. [7] Time featured the website and four others in its "50 Best Websites 2009". [8] Fora.tv was praised for its intellectual videos [9] with a few calling it "The C-SPAN of the Web"; [10] and it was compared with the online TED Talks. [11] [4] [12] Website traffic continued to grow for the intellectual hour-long videos to about 3 million views per month by September 2010, tripling in 18 months. [13]

On August 31, 2018, the online video library was taken down. [14] The earlier version of the website had boasted that "brilliant ideas are expressed everyday, everywhere, and we don't want you to miss them" and invited a visitor to "watch events". After the takedown of the library, the site only advertises video production services, mentioning in passing, "25,000+ videos produced".

As of July 2019, the website "fora.tv" was no longer accessible and remains inaccessible as of January 2023.

An SNL Digital Short is one in a series of comedic and often musical video shorts created for NBC's Saturday Night Live. The origin of the Digital Short brand is credited to staff writer Adam McKay, who created content for the show in collaboration with SNL hosts, writers, and cast members. The popularity of these segments exploded following the addition of The Lonely Island to the show, and it is to them that credit is given for ushering SNL "into the age of digital online content in a time when it needed to tap into that relevance more than ever." The Lonely Island's digital shorts were originally recorded with consumer grade digital video cameras and edited on personal computers. It is typical for the show's hosts and musical guests to take part in that week's Digital Short, and several shorts have included appearances by celebrities who were not scheduled to appear in any of that episode's live sketches.

<i>lonelygirl15</i> 2006 fiction web series

lonelygirl15 is an American science fiction thriller web series created by Miles Beckett, Mesh Flinders, Greg Goodfried, and Amanda Goodfried. It was independently released on YouTube from June 16, 2006 to August 1, 2008, and was also briefly released on Revver and Myspace. The series revolves around the initially mundane life of homeschooled 16-year-old Bree Avery, who uses the username Lonelygirl15 online. She goes on the run with her friend Daniel after her parents' mysterious religion is revealed to be The Order, a blood-harvesting operation that wants her "trait positive" blood. The series is presented through video blogs, or vlogs, originally recorded solely from Bree's bedroom.

Vimeo's business model is through software as a service (SaaS). They derive revenue by providing subscription plans for businesses and content creators. Vimeo provides its subscribers with tools for video creation, editing, and broadcasting, enterprise software solutions, as well as the means for video professionals to connect with clients and other professionals. As of December 2021, the site has 260 million users, with around 1.6 million subscribers to its services.

Justin.tv was a website created by Justin Kan, Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel, and Kyle Vogt in 2007 to allow anyone to broadcast video online. Justin.tv user accounts were called "channels", like those on YouTube, and users were encouraged to broadcast a wide variety of user-generated live video content, called "broadcasts".
