Ford Palmer (born October 6, 1990) is a professional middle-distance runner who specializes in the 1500 meters and the mile. He ran in the men's 1500 meters at the 2016 US Olympic Trials. [2]

Running career

High school

Palmer attended Absegami High School in Galloway Township, New Jersey, where he played as a linebacker for the school's football team. [3] Outside of football season, Palmer ran on Absegami's track team as an 800 meter runner. However, after suffering a total of four concussions over the course of high school, he gave up football in order to focus on running. [3] At New Jersey's 2009 Meet of Champions, Palmer placed third overall in the boys' 800 meter race in a time of 1:52.24, his best result in high school. [3]

Collegiate

Palmer attended and ran track at Monmouth University, where he was coached by Chris Tarello. [4] After graduating from high school, Palmer's weight at one point was as high as 205 pounds. [3] In his first two seasons at Monmouth, his training volume was considerably low at 25 miles of running per week. [3] As a junior, a physical check-up revealed that Palmer had high blood pressure. [4] After the diagnosis, he watched Forks Over Knives , after which he began a pescetarian diet, which he maintained for a year. [4] Subsequently, he tried a vegetarian diet, after which he fully transitioned into a vegan in 2011. [4] By the end of Palmer's senior year at Monmouth, he not only changed his diet but also lost 51 pounds [3] and recorded a mile time of 4:00.4. [5]

Post-collegiate

After graduating from Monmouth in 2013, Palmer began working as a bartender while training under coach Frank Gagliano with New Jersey New York Track Club. [4] In early 2014, he was close to quitting the sport as he worked some overnight bar shifts in order to support himself. [4] He made a career breakthrough on August 1, 2014, when he won the Sir Walter Miler in 3:57.61, his first ever mile under four minutes. [6] In January 2015, Palmer signed a professional contract with Hoka One One. [5] The following year, he raced in the men's 1500 meters at the 2016 US Olympic Trials, but did not progress beyond the first heat. [2]

Palmer has divided his time living with his mother in Galloway Township and his father in Upper Township, New Jersey. [7]

Nicholas Boone Symmonds is a retired American middle-distance track athlete, from Boise, Idaho, specializing in the 800 meters and 1500 meters distances. Symmonds signed with Brooks Running in January 2014 after a 7-year sponsorship with Nike. In college at Willamette University he won seven NCAA Division III titles in outdoor track. Symmonds is a 6-time US National 800 meters champion. He has competed in the 800m at two Olympic Games, reaching the semi-finals in Beijing 2008, while in London 2012, he finished fifth in the final, running a personal best of 1:42.95 behind David Rudisha's world record. He won a silver medal in the 800 meters at the 2013 World Championships, having previously finished sixth in the 2009 final and fifth in 2011.

Shannon Rowbury American middle-distance runner

Shannon Rowbury is an American middle-distance runner from San Francisco, California. After competing collegiately for Duke University, she turned professional in 2007. Rowbury has represented the United States at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics. She also represented the United States at the World Championships in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, winning the bronze medal in the 1500 meters in 2009. In 2015, Rowbury helped set the world record with the U.S. team for the distance medley relay event, and set a then-American record for 1500 meters on July 17, 2015, breaking Mary Slaney's 32 year-old mark with a time of 3:56.29.

He is the current American collegiate steeplechase record holder and was the 2012 NCAA steeplechase champion. He competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics in the steeplechase. At Princeton, Cabral was an eight-time NCAA All-American and ten-time individual Ivy League champion. Cristian Soratos is an American professional middle-distance runner. Born in Salinas, California, he first took up competitive running at Salinas High School. He then ran at Hartnell College where he eventually became All-State, after which he was recruited to Montana State University. After running several races at high altitude, Soratos ran his first sub-4 minute mile in 2015, and went on to emerge as one of the fastest collegiate runners in the United States. On June 25, 2015, he became a professional runner when he signed a contract to be sponsored by Adidas.
