Frank-Manuel Peter (born 1959) is a German dance researcher and historian.

Life and work

Born in Berlin, Peter studied theatre, history of art, German studies and library science at the Free University of Berlin and graduated as a master's degree. In 2004, he was promoted to Ph.D. with a thesis on Dore Hoyer.

Peter has been director of the Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln since 1986. He has been a lecturer since 2005 and an honorary professor for the dance studies programme at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln since 2012. [1]

He is in charge of the book series Studien und Dokumente zur Tanzwissenschaft published by the Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln, with Walter Salmen and from volume 8 onwards with Gabriele Busch-Salmen the series Terpsichore - Tanzhistorische Studien and the Bibliographie deutschsprachiger Hochschulschriften zur Tanzwissenschaft/Tanzforschung. Peter is a member of the advisory board of the Alexander and Renata Camaro foundation. [3]

He is for the "Deutsche Tanzarchiv Köln" editor or co-editor of monographs by other authors on Kurt Jooss, Oda Schottmüller, Hanna Berger, Alexander von Swaine, and Gret Palucca, as well as three CD-ROMs. [4]

The Bröhan Museum is a Berlin state museum for Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Functionalism, located in Berlin's Charlottenburg district. The Museum is named after its founder, entrepreneur and art collector Karl. H. Bröhan (1921–2000), who donated his collection to the state of Berlin on the occasion of his 60th birthday. In 1983, the Bröhan Museum opened in its current space, which belongs to the Charlottenburg Palace ensemble and was originally built for the guard regiment. Since 1994, it has been a state museum.

Dore Hoyer was a German expressionist dancer and choreographer. She is credited as "one of the most important solo dancers of the Ausdruckstanz tradition." Inspired by Mary Wigman, she developed her own solo programmes and toured widely before and after the Second World War. Wigman called Hoyer "Europe's last great modern dancer."

Oda Schottmüller was an expressive dancer, mask maker and sculptor. Schottmüller was most notable as a resistance fighter against the Nazis, through her association with a Berlin-based anti-fascist resistance group that she met through the sculptor Kurt Schumacher. The group would later be named by the Gestapo as Die Rote Kapelle.

St Peter's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Cologne, run by the Jesuits. The painter Rubens was baptised in the church and his The Crucifixion of St Peter is on display there – it was commissioned in 1638 by the Cologne art collector and businessman Eberhard Jabach. Michael Hampe was a German theatre and opera director, general manager (Intendant) and actor. He developed from acting and directing plays at German and Swiss theatres including the Bern Theatre, to focus on directing opera and managing opera houses, first at the Mannheim National Theatre, then the Cologne Opera from 1975. He was professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln since 1977. Hampe was influential for both the Salzburg Festival and, after the reunification of Germany, the Dresden Music Festival for which he commissioned and directed world premieres. He directed at international opera houses and festivals, including productions recorded for television, film and DVD.
