Fried bread is a slice of bread that has been fried. It is used as a substitute for toast in various dishes or meals. [1] [2] [3] Various oils, butter, lard, bacon drippings, or ghee can be used. [1] [4] Some cooks may choose to fry rather than toast to avoid having to give counter or storage space to or spend money on a toaster. [1] [4] Proponents of frying rather than toasting call out the extra flavor and crispiness that can be achieved by frying in fat rather than dry-toasting. [1] [2] [3]

United States

In the United States, toast is much more popular at breakfast. However, fried bread is still eaten, particularly in the form of French toast, but sometimes as simply a slice of bread fried in butter.[ citation needed ]

Cracklings are sometimes used in its preparation as well. In Emilia-Romagna, it is typically sliced into diamond shapes and then fried, and may be accompanied with cheese and salumi. When it is fried, the bread puffs up, and it may include yeast or baking soda to leaven it. Versions prepared with milk are softer than those prepared with water. It may be served either as an appetizer or as a main dish. Despite the name by which in Italy it is often referred to as a kind of gnocchi, it is technically not.

Fatoot samneh is a dish originating in Yemeni cuisine, consisting of pieces of saluf or malawach, or pita, that have been fried in clarified butter and combined with beaten egg. It is commonly served as a breakfast or dinner dish. It was brought to Israel by Yemenite Jews. It is somewhat similar to the Jewish matzah brei or the Mexican-American migas, which are made with matzo, and corn tortillas, respectively; whereas fatoot samneh is made with pita bread.

Breakfast, the first meal of the day eaten after waking from the night's sleep, varies in composition and tradition across the world.
