Dr. G. Prabha is a retired professor of Sanskrit, writer, film-maker and former journalist based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Life and career

He started his career as a journalist but soon switched to teaching. He worked in Government Sanskrit College, Tripunithura (Kerala), St. Joseph's College, [1] Tiruchi (Tamil Nadu) and Loyola College, [2] Chennai, from where he retired in 2014 as Professor of Sanskrit [3] and Head of the Department of Oriental Languages.

Prabha wrote and directed 'Ishti', the first film in Sanskrit with a social theme. It won critical acclaim at several film festivals. He has also filmed two documentaries 'Agnaye' [4] and 'Akkitham'. Agnaye, produced by Shri AV Anoop of AVA Productions, captures every aspect of an Athirathram or Agni Yagam. The documentary Akkitham [5] is about the famous Malayalam poet Akkitham Achyuthan Namboothiri. He has also authored two short story collections, two non-fiction books, 26 important research paper, and numerous articles.

Education

Dr. G. Prabha holds a Doctorate in Sanskrit, [6] conferred by the University of Madras in the year 2001.

Movie

Ishti (English: Search for the Self), is a Sanskrit film, directed by Dr. G. Prabha features thespian Nedumudi Venu and newcomer Athira Patel in key roles. "Ishti" literally means search for self, yaga, etc. The film is the first in Sanskrit with a social theme.

Ishti, is written, scripted, produced and directed by Dr. Prabha Gopala Pillai, [7] a Sanskrit professor and a doctorate holder in Sanskrit. Ishti is not the country's first Sanskrit film. But it certainly is the first one to deal with a social theme.

G. Aravindan Indian film director

Govindan Aravindan was an Indian film director, screenwriter, musician, cartoonist, and painter. He was one of the pioneers of parallel cinema in Malayalam. He was known for his unorthodox way of filmmaking; he changed his cinematic forms consistently and experimented in storytelling without regular narrative styles. He studied at University College, Trivandrum. Before venturing into the film field, he was an established cartoonist. He had also worked with documentaries and theatre. Thazhathupurakkal Karunakara Panicker Rajeev Kumar is a National Award-winning Indian director of Malayalam films, from Trivandrum. He is the winner of five Kerala State Film Awards for Best Film, Director, Story Writer & Script Writer, a show director, theatre actor and percussionist (Mridangam). He is a founding member and leader of the musical band Blue Birds in 1980 and Super Mimics, a comedy show in 1979. He is also the Kerala University winner of Mono Act in the University Youth Festivals 1980–1982 and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy winner for Mono Act 1979–1982.

Venu Nagavally Indian actor

Venu Nagavally was an Indian film actor, screenwriter and director best known for his work in Malayalam film industry. He has directed 12 films. Son of writer, commentator, and broadcaster Nagavally R. S. Kurup, Venu has acted in about fifty films, directed films such as Sukhamo Devi (1986), Sarvakalashala (1987), Lal Salam (1990), and Aye Auto (1990), and scripted the commercially successful Kilukkam (1991).

Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri Indian writer (1926–2020)

Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, popularly known as Akkitham, was an Indian poet and essayist who wrote in Malayalam. He was known for a simple and lucid style of writing, exploring themes of profound love and compassion in his works. Some of his prominent works included Irupatham Noottandinte Ithihasam, Balidarshanam , and Nimisha Kshetram.

Margam is an Indian film co-written, directed and produced by Rajiv Vijay Raghavan under the banner of Image commune. The film is an adaptation of Pithrutharppanam, the famous story by M. Sukumaran. Margam won seven major Kerala State Film Awards from the government of Kerala and one National Film Award from the government of India in 2003. One of the rarest Malayalam films that received wider critical acclaim at international level, Margam was exhibited at 16 international film festivals and won six international awards in categories including best film and scripting. The script was co-written by Rajiv Vijay Raghavan, Anvar Ali and Dr. S P Ramesh. Cinematography was by Venu and the roles performed by Nedumudi Venu and Meera Krishna were also widely appreciated.

Lijin Jose is a Malayalam film director with two feature films and one documentary to his credit. His debut movie was Friday starring Fahad Fazil. He is also the founder of Every Dog has its Day Productions (EDHID) and Make My Theatre. He studied filmmaking from C-DIT. His diploma project film, Night Is Difficult to Cut won the best student film award by UGC-CEC. He worked as a paneled director at C-DIT where he made many documentaries, ad films and public awareness films. Vipin Vijay is an Indian film director and screenwriter. He received his post-graduate degree in filmmaking from the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute SRFTI, Calcutta. He received the Charles Wallace Arts Award for research at the British Film Institute, London, 2003. Vipin is the recipient of "The Sanskriti Award" (2007) for social & cultural achievement. His works are made under independent codes and defy any categorisation eluding all traditional genre definitions and merge experimental film, documentary, essay, fiction all into one.

P. Venu Indian film director (1940)

P. Venu, was an Indian film director, producer, script writer, and lyricist with over 20 films to his credit. His directorial venture Udhyogastha in 1967 was the first-ever multi-star cast film of the south India. His work in Malayalam cinema was significant and most influential, covering all themes and genres over a career spanning more than 40 years. His most recognized film C.I.D. Nazir, in 1971, revolutionized movie-making in the investigative genre in Malayalam cinema. Following this film's commercial and critical success, he came up with two more in the series - Taxi Car in 1972 and Prethangalude Thazhvara in 1973, as the first investigative sequels in Malayalam cinema. His last film, Parinamam , in 2003 won an honour for the Malayalam cinema on the global stage by winning the Best Screenplay Award at the Ashdod International Film Festival in Israel. In 2005 he was bestowed with the Kala Prathiba Award by the Kerala Film Critics Association for his immense contribution to Malayalam cinema. He was also an active member of MACTA. He published his book titled Udyogastha Muthal in 2010, reminiscing his life as a filmmaker and his experiences in the film industry.

Parinamam is a 2003 Indian Malayalam film, directed by P. Venu, starring Nedumudi Venu, Madampu Kunjukuttan and Kaviyoor Ponnamma in the lead roles.

Amshan Kumar is an Indian filmmaker and writer. He has won a National Film Award for his documentary film Yazhpanan Thedchanamoorthy - Music beyond boundaries in the year 2015. Sanskrit Cinema is a part of Indian cinema. Only 11 films have been made in Sanskrit have been made so far since 1983. There is no separate industry set for Sanskrit films.

Sivaram Mony Indian film director and editor

Athira Patel

Athira Patel is an Indian film actress who mainly appears in Malayalam films. She made her acting debut in 2016 with the Sanskrit film Ishti. She is best known for playing the role of Vincent Pepe's sister in Angamaly Diaries.
