GFW Schools is an independent public school district in south central Minnesota. Originally formed to serve the communities of Gibbon, Fairfax and Winthrop, the district has expanded over time to encompasses large portions of other surrounding communities, including:

The district consists of two schools (before 2020, one was in each of the original three communities):

The middle school in Fairfax, Minnesota was closed following the 2019-2020 school year where the 6-8th grades were brought to Winthrop.

The district's school board consists of six members (two from each of the three communities). The term of office is four years.

Technology Initiatives

Interactive Cable TV (ICTV) System

Launched in 1985, the Sibley County Interactive Cable TV System was a groundbreaking form of distance education using interactive television that drew national media attention. [3] [4]

iPad Initiative

Launched in 2010, the iPad Initiative made GFW one of the first schools in the nation to provide all of its high school students with iPads. Because of this, it became known as a pioneer in making the switch from physical textbooks to electronic textbooks, and consequently gained local and national press coverage. [5] [6] [7] [8]

For its trailblazing efforts, GFW was awarded the Apple Distinguished School award by Apple for the 2010-2011 school year. [9]

It is governed by a 15-member board of trustees appointed by the governor, which has broad authority to run the system. Minnesota State University, Mankato, also known as Minnesota State, is a public university in Mankato, Minnesota. Established as the Second State Normal School in 1858, it was designated in Mankato in 1866, and officially opened as Mankato Normal School in 1868. It is the second oldest member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. It is also the second largest university in the state, and has over 123,000 living alumni worldwide. It is the most comprehensive of the seven state universities and is referred to as the flagship of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center Multi-purpose arena in Mankato, Minnesota

The Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center is a 5,280-seat multi-purpose arena in Mankato, Minnesota, built in 1994 and opened in early 1995. It is home to the Minnesota State Mavericks men's ice hockey team and women's ice hockey team, and also hosts musical performances, conventions and other events. Prior to its construction, the team played their home games at All Seasons Arena, which is now their main practice facility.

Apple Books is an e-book reading and store application by Apple Inc. for its iOS and macOS operating systems and devices. It was announced, under the name iBooks, in conjunction with the iPad on January 27, 2010, and was released for the iPhone and iPod Touch in mid-2010, as part of the iOS 4 update. Initially, iBooks was not pre-loaded onto iOS devices, but users could install it free of charge from the iTunes App Store. With the release of iOS 8, it became an integrated app. On June 10, 2013, at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, Craig Federighi announced that iBooks would also be provided with OS X Mavericks in fall 2013.

According to the school district in 2016, Mankato West enrolls about 1150 students in four grades, grades 9–12. iPad Pro Line of tablet computers made by Apple since 2015

iPad Pro is a premium professional sub-lineup of the iPad tablet computers by Apple Inc.. It runs iPadOS, an optimized derivation from the predecessor iOS. The original iPad Pro was introduced in September 2015 which was originally based in iOS 9; the second generation, unveiled in June 2017, made uses of an upgraded A10X Fusion chip with an extended 10.5-inch screen display. The home button was eliminated following the third lineup for a full display at 11-inch, and it features an array sensor Face ID capable of performing unlocking at wide angles. The fourth-lineup, introduced in March 2020, included the A12Z chip with added compatibility to the Magic Keyboard. The current model fifth generation was announced on April 2021, incorporating a desktop-class SoC Apple silicon M1 chip, marking the first model to not use an A-series processor.

Mankato Marathon

The Mankato Marathon is an annual marathon race in Mankato, Minnesota, that was first run in 2010. The race weekend now brings nearly 5,000 runners to the city for several races: the marathon, a marathon four-person relay, a half marathon, a 10K run, a 5K run, children's runs. The race course is certified by the USATF, making it a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

The fifth-generation iPad Pro is a line of tablet computers designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The two models were announced on an Apple Event on April 20, 2021, with the same screen size options as the previous generation: 11-inch (28 cm) and 12.9-inch (33 cm). Preorders began on April 30, 2021, and the product was released on May 21, 2021. It comes in two colors: Silver and Space Gray.
