Gambling is illegal in Bangladesh. [1] While the Public Gambling Act of 1867 prohibits public gambling and common casinoes, the rise of online gambling had created a legal gray area. [2]

Lottery

Unlike gambling and betting, recognized entities can operate lotteries in Bangladesh. [3]

Online gambling

The Public Gambling Act serves as the primary legislation governing gambling in Bangladesh. [4] However, its enactment in 1867 predates the internet age. This has led to ambiguities regarding the legality of online gambling. There is lack of specific regulations for online platforms, which leaves authorities and citizens unsure of the legal boundaries. [4] The ambiguity created a breeding ground for unregulated online gambling activities. The absence of proper regulations allows these platforms to operate with limited oversight. [5] These have raised concerns about potential financial risks, addiction as well as criminal activity.

It has been recognized that online gambling is used for laundering millions from Bangladesh to other countries. [4] Mobile banking agents in Meherpur is a conduit for many of the online gambling operation. [6]

Sports betting

Online sports betting in Bangladesh increased dramatically after 2012 Bangladesh Premier League tournament. [7] Vast amount of teenagers in rural areas are addicted to gambling in Bangladesh. They come across the advertisement for these gambling sites through Facebook and YouTube ads. [8] One Upazilla had cut cable during a match to try and curb betting. [9] Many gamblers wind-up selling their land and other assets to sustain this addiction, and some commit suicide after incurring huge losses. [10]

BPL, IPL, La Liga as well as English Premier League attracted gambling. [11]

Shakib Al Hasan, a sports personality, had come under fire for promoting a betting website. [8] He withdrew from the contract after pressure from BCB and the start of an investigation by Criminal Investigation Department. [12] [8] Shakib's sister, Jannatul Hasan Ritu, name came up in an investigation on another incident known as Mahadev betting app case, where she was named an investor. [13]

Prosecution

Given the lack of harsh punishment for operating gambling operations, police have been using other laws such as Sections 23, 24, 26, 30 and 35 of the Digital Security Act, Money Laundering and Fraud laws are used for prosecuting gambling operations. [8]

Gambling has been present in the Philippines since at least the sixteenth century. Various legal and illegal forms of gambling are found almost all over the archipelago. The government manages gambling through the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) a state-owned enterprise which both operates a number of individual casinos and in turn acts as a regulator to privately owned casino operators. Since 2016 PAGCOR has also granted operating licenses and overseen the regulation of growing online gambling sector serving offshore markets. Casino gambling and integrated resorts have become a key component of the Philippines appeal as a tourist destination with more than twenty casinos found in Metro Manila alone.

Nazmul Hassan Papon is a Bangladeshi politician and a cricket administrator. He is the incumbent Minister of Youth and Sports and the incumbent Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Kishoreganj-6 constituency. He is also the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Gambling in Nigeria is not well regulated. Although there is a gambling law in place, many illegal casinos operate in the country. The legal land-based casinos are located in the two largest cities. The biggest casino is The Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos. Nigerian law focuses on activities to reduce money laundering and illegal gambling.

The Bangladesh cricket team toured India in November 2019 to play two Test and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The Test series formed part of the inaugural 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship. It was the second time that Bangladesh toured India to play a Test series, and the first time that Bangladesh played a T20I series against India in India. The Test series also featured the first day/night match to be played by either side.

The Bangladesh cricket team toured South Africa in March and April 2022 to play two Tests and three One Day International (ODI) matches. The Test series formed part of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship, and the ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. On 9 February 2022, Cricket South Africa confirmed the schedule and venues for the series.

Fantasy sports came to India in the later half of the 2010s. The Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS) is the highest governing body.
