Garnell W. Whitfield,Jr. is the former fire commissioner of the Buffalo Fire Department in Buffalo,New York and a social justice advocate. He received national attention for spreading awareness of white supremacy and domestic terrorism after his mother,Ruth Whitfield,was killed in the 2022 Buffalo shooting.
Whitfield was born in Buffalo,New York to Ruth Whitfield and Garnell W. Whitfield,Sr. [3]
He started working as a firefighter in the Buffalo Fire Department in 1984. Throughout his career,he served as the city fire departments's chief fire administrator,deputy commissioner of administration and deputy commissioner of emergency services. [4]
In January 2010,Mayor of Buffalo Byron Brown appointed Whitfield as the commissioner of the Buffalo Fire Department after the resignation of commissioner Michael Lombardo. [5] [6] He was unanimously approved by the Buffalo Common Council. [5]
Whitfield retired from the Buffalo Fire Department in 2017. [7] Governor Andrew Cuomo then appointed Whitfield as the assistant commissioner of the New York Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services,where he served from September 2017 until September 2019. [8]
His mother,Ruth Whitfield,was the oldest victim of the 2022 Buffalo shooting that occurred at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Side neighborhood of Buffalo. He said he had been calling his mother and trying to locate her,until he found her car in the parking lot of the Tops Supermarket where the shooting occurred. [9]
She was 86 years old when the shooting occurred. Her funeral was attended by Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband,Douglas Emhoff. The Vice President met with Whitfield before his mother's funeral service. [10]
In an effort to raise awareness of white supremacy and domestic terrorism in the United States,Whitfield testified in the United States Senate Judiciary Committee. [11] [12]
Whitfield appeared on news outlets after the shooting alongside prominent civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump,who he retained for legal counsel in the wake of shooting. [13] [14]
In June 2022,Whitfield was featured as a speaker at the March for Our Lives protest held in Washington,D.C. [15] [16]
Whitfield is married to his wife,Cassieta. They live in the East Side neighborhood of Buffalo.

The United States Department of State defined terrorism in 2003 as "premeditated,politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents,usually intended to influence an audience." However,the U.S. government cannot charge someone with domestic terrorism because no such criminal law exists.

Another African-American man suspected in the first shooting was arrested in Georgia a week later and charged in the shooting of one of those injured. On August 3,2019,a mass shooting occurred at a Walmart in El Paso,Texas,United States. In the terrorist attack,a far-right individual killed 23 people and injured 23 others. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime. The shooting has been described as the deadliest attack on Latinos in modern American history,and is the deadliest mass shooting in the US to conclude with an alleged perpetrator being caught alive to face legal repercussions.
On 29 November 2019,five people were stabbed,two fatally,in Central London. The attacker,Usman Khan,had been released from prison in 2018 on licence after serving a sentence for terrorist offences.
On February 9,2021,a mass shooting and bombing occurred at a medical clinic in Buffalo,Minnesota,United States. Just before 11:00 a.m. CST,Gregory Paul Ulrich,a 67-year-old man,shot five people at Allina Health's Buffalo Crossroads facility. One victim,Lindsay Overbay,died,and three others were critically injured from gunshot wounds. All of the victims were medical clinic staff. During the attack,Ulrich discharged three improvised explosive devices,one of which failed to detonate. He surrendered to police who were dispatched to the clinic,and he was taken into custody. He admitted to authorities that he fired on people inside the clinic and set off bombs.
Ruth Bermudez Montenegro is an American lawyer who has served as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California since 2022. She served as a United States magistrate judge of the same court from 2018 to 2022.
On 21 November 2021,a shooting took place in the Old City of Jerusalem. Fadi Abu Shkhaydem,a 42-year-old Palestinian from East Jerusalem killed a 26 year old Israeli,who had made aliyah from South Africa in 2019. He injured four others before being shot dead by police.
On May 14,2022,a mass shooting occurred in Buffalo,New York,United States,at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Side neighborhood. Ten people,all of whom were Black,were murdered and three were injured. The shooter,identified as 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron,livestreamed part of the attack on Twitch,but the livestream was shut down by the service in under two minutes. Gendron was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. He formally entered a plea of "not guilty" on May 19,2022. On November 28,2022,Gendron pleaded guilty to all state charges in the shooting,including murder,terrorism,and hate crimes.
