In March 2024, over 500 researchers, including editors, reviewers, contributors, and readers, resigned from the journal in protest against the publisher's actions, which they claim threaten their academic freedom by attempting to make the journal more mainstream for commercial interests. The protest began in early March when 345 researchers sent a resignation letter to Wiley, with an additional 200+ joining since, criticizing the appointment of three new editors from fields like marketing and entrepreneurship, who lack previous connection to the journal and its scientific profile. The researchers highlight the issue as stemming from Wiley's increasing economic interest, leading to fewer resources for the journal while pushing for more publications to generate higher income, compromising the quality and independence of the journal. The controversy also includes criticisms of the recruitment process for the new editors, described as lacking transparency and disregarding qualified internal candidates, which the resigning members view as an attempt to dilute the journal's focus on gender research for broader appeal. Wiley responds by expressing disappointment over the resignations, insisting on a thorough and inclusive selection process for new editors and denying any shift in the journal's goals or quality, aiming to continue its success with a new editorial team.
