Gilbert Lukalia is a Kenyan actor and film director. [1] [2]

Career

Lukalia grew up in a military family and began his early career as a stage actor at the Kenya National Theatre. [2] He has also worked in multiple different positions in the film industry: as an assistant director and producer [2] He is currently working at the Nairobi based Dream House Productions, which produces theatre plays, music events, TV-series and films both for Tv and big screen [2] [3]

He has acted and directed award-winning feature films and TV series in Kenya including Mission to Rescue , Shattered , Pray and Prey , Lost in Africa and the First Grader .

Mission to Rescue was in 2021 selected as Kenya's submission at the 94th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

He has also directed some international films such as The Marshal of Finland . [4] [5] The film's world premiere was at The Helsinki International Love & Anarchy Film Festival on 28 September 2012.

He also directed Strength of A Woman in 2014 where it received nominations at the 2014 Kalasha Awards [6] and won five awards. [2] It won awards for Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Lighting and Best Original Score. [7] It had stars renowned Kenyan actors with Rose K. Njoroge taking the lead role and Laura Leila Wingate, Ashford Kirimi, Sandra Dhacha taking up supporting roles which they expertly and vividly depict. [2]

Kalasha Film & TV Awards is an annual accolade presented by Kenya Film Commission with a goal to recognize and celebrate achievers in Kenya's TV and film industry. Entries into the award ceremony are films and TV series that have been aired on Kenyan television stations. Hawa Essuman is a film director based in Nairobi, Kenya. Her 2017 feature-length documentary Silas, co-directed with Anjali Neyar, tells the story of Liberian environmental activist Silas Siakor's fight to preserve the country's rainforests from commercial logging. The film won multiple awards, including the Amnesty International Durban Human Rights Award (2018) and the Audience Award for best documentary at the Riverrun Film Festival (2018). Hawa's first feature film, Soul Boy (2010), also received a series of awards. In addition, Hawa has produced a range of TV programmes, commercial films, music videos and adverts.

The 7th Kalasha TV & Film Awards ceremony, presented by the Kenya Film Commission (KFC), honored the best Kenyan films of 2017 and took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Upper Hill, Nairobi, Kenya. The ceremony was held on December 11, 2017. During the ceremony, the Kenya Film Commission presented Kalasha Awards in 16 categories which included Best Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Short Film, Best Director of Photography, Best Editor, Best Documentary and Best Local Language Film.

Mission to Rescue is a 2021 Kenyan action film directed by Gilbert Lukalia. It was selected as the 2021 Kenyan entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. The film is based on a true story based on the Al-Shabaab abduction of a French tourist in Kenya in 2011.

Ravi Karmalker is a German-Indian film producer, director, writer and coach located in Cologne and Nairobi who till date received numerous awards and nominations at international film festivals. Since 2019, he has produced TV series and feature films mainly in close partnership with Netflix and ZDFarte.
