Gladstone is a suburb of New Zealand's southernmost city, Invercargill.

The area is low-lying and at risk from flooding and sea level rise. [1]

Southland Boys' High School is located in Gladstone.

History

The suburb was targeted during a six week burglary spree in December 2019 and January 2020. [2]

In July 2020, a member of the public was injured during the aggravated robbery of a Gladstone convenience store. [3] Two men were charged over the incident the following month. [4]

In September 2020, the Southland Times reported high demand for land and housing in Gladstone. [5] However, in November 2020, Quotable Values released statistics showing house values were increasing at a slower rate than the rest of Invercargill. [6]

H & J Smith Holdings Ltd, branded as H & J Smith and known colloquially as H&J's or Smith's is a company which operates in the lower South Island of New Zealand. The company primarily operates department stores, but also some specialty stores and franchises. The department stores are located in Invercargill, Gore and Queenstown. There were also department stores in Dunedin, Te Anau, and Balclutha but these stores were between August 2020 and January 2021. Historically H & J Smith operated a network of stores in the Nelson and Blenheim area and these were stores closed around 2006. H & J Smith has been operating since 1900.

Clutha-Southland Former electoral district in New Zealand

Clutha-Southland was a parliamentary constituency returning one member to the New Zealand House of Representatives. The last MP for Clutha Southland was Hamish Walker of the National Party. He held the seat for one term, being elected at the 2017 general election and representing the electorate until the 2020 general election where he retired from Parliament, and the seat was relaced with the Southland electorate.

Fortification is a locality in the western part of the Catlins region of Southland in New Zealand's South Island. Nearby settlements include Quarry Hills and Waikawa to the southeast, Tokanui to the southwest, and Waimahaka to the west. It is over 50 km east of Southland's main centre, Invercargill.

Southland Museum and Art Gallery

The Southland Museum and Art Gallery Niho o te Taniwha is located in Gala Street, Invercargill, New Zealand. It is Southland's largest cultural and heritage institution, and contains a wide variety of the region's art, history and natural history collections. It is notable for its 1990 pyramid-shaped building, constructed over the original 1942 museum. In April 2018 the museum was closed indefinitely due to earthquake risks.
